At four in the morning, the cold alarm pierced the darkness like a sharp knife. Li Yang awoke from a nightmare, sweat beading on his forehead. In the dream, he was still in his Beijing rental, his mother holding a steaming bowl of noodles, urging him to get up.

“Get up!” Xiao Zhou’s voice snapped him out of his daze. His roommate’s pale face looked especially haggard under the dim light. “If you’re more than five minutes late to the training room, you get punished with electric shocks. Brother Zhao, the newcomer, overslept and is still lying in the infirmary.”

Li Yang stumbled to his feet, hurriedly donning the gray training uniform distributed to them, along with the bespectacled young man. The fabric was coarse, redolent with a sharp disinfectant odor. The corridors echoed with the sound of many footsteps, like prisoners being led to the execution ground.

The training building was a four-story gray-and-white structure with peeling walls and barred windows. At every corner, surveillance cameras blinked red, resembling countless watchful eyes.

About fifty new recruits had already gathered on the playground. The morning chill bit like knives, but no one dared to shiver. A dozen armed guards stood in a circle, their dogs held firmly on taut leashes, conspicuous even in the faint light.

“Welcome to our elite telecommunications sales training program,” a shrill, piercing voice cut through the cold air.

A small, thin middle-aged man paced to the front of the group. Dressed in a crisp black suit with a dark red tie, his hands clasped behind his back, a sinister smile played on his lips. This was Wang Meng, the head of training, a former high school teacher and now one of the key figures in this hellish compound.

“Seeing you all reminds me of myself five years ago,” Wang Meng’s gaze swept over them. “Back then, I was teaching at a high school, earning three thousand yuan a month, tormented by endless trivialities. Until I found the chance that changed my fate…” His eyes gleamed with ruthless determination. “Now, I’m here to give you that chance.”

Behind him stood six assistants, all burly and expressionless. They gripped electric shock batons and wore pistols at their waists, their cold stares like those of slaughtermen eyeing their prey.

“Remember, starting today, you’re no longer the timid selves you once were,” Wang Meng raised his voice. “You are elites, hunters, winners of this era!”

The training room was oppressively stifling. The blinds were tightly shut, and under the dim yellow light, freshly painted white walls were plastered with slogans: “Performance is life,” “No deceit today, beaten tomorrow,” “Nothing is impossible, only laziness.”

“First, we will memorize the scam scripts,” Wang Meng produced a stack of A4 sheets. “These are our basic scripts, refined through countless iterations. If you can’t remember, you bear the consequences.”

The assistants began handing out the scripts. Li Yang took his—pages densely packed with various lines. The paper was soaked with sweatI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
