Wei An quietly rolled her eyes and stepped inside. Du Haibo hurriedly reached out to stop her but missed as Wei An moved too swiftly.

There was no other way—he couldn’t just let this young lady see things she shouldn’t.

He had no choice but to follow her, speaking loudly as he went, “How come I didn’t hear anything? Are you sure you didn’t mishear?”

Wei An ignored him, switched on her flashlight, and quickly shone it into the shadows between two apartment buildings in the alley.

“Help!”

Just as the beam of light swept over, both Wei An and Du Haibo clearly saw a lecherous face. Slightly lowering their gaze, they spotted a young woman in disheveled clothes and hair, crawling desperately toward them.

Wei An thought, “So it’s true,” and silently thanked her timing was right. She put on a frightened expression and stammered, “Sis… brother-in-law?”

Du Haibo reacted much faster.

Seeing the young woman on the ground, he immediately realized the situation was not what he had initially imagined.

He threw down his umbrella and strode forward, his large hand transforming into a fist aimed squarely at the lecherous man’s chin.

Wei An felt a gust of wind pass by, her vision blurred, and then she heard the man grunt. The sound of punches landing followed, along with the man pleading for mercy.

Swallowing nervously, Wei An felt a flicker of fear.

She bent down to help the young woman up, checking for injuries as she asked, “Do you know this man? It’s dark and raining, why would a young woman like you walk through such an alley where hardly anyone passes?”

“I don’t know him. He’s a bad man. He dragged me into the alley to harass me.”

The young woman trembled, whether from cold or fright, but spoke clearly and coherently.

“Please, kind sir, just restrain him—not kill him, so you won’t get into trouble. Restrain him; I want to take him to the police station.”

Wei An: “…”

Had this girl just stolen her line?

Also, her voice was incredibly sweet—despite saying things to scare the scoundrel, it was clear, ethereal, and carried a slight magnetism.

Du Haibo stopped and grabbed the back collar of the lecherous man’s shirt, dragging him toward the street.

“Let’s go.”

Delivering a person to the police station had to be done thoroughly.

Since the situation had already arisen, he couldn’t just leave the girl to take the scoundrel to the station alone.

Without looking away, he passed by Wei An and the young woman, pulling the lecherous man ahead.

The young woman thanked Wei An again, “Thank you. If it weren’t for your sharp ears, I’d have suffered badly.”

Only then did Wei An get a good look at her face in the flashlight’s glow.

She had a baby-faced, fair complexion, looking tender and fresh.

Her eyebrows were like willow leaves, eyes like apricots, her nose delicate and straight, lips small and exquisite, with a softly rounded chin slightly upturned.

Wei An’s eyes lit up:

What a pure and sweet beauty!

“No need to thank me. You were just lucky to run into me while I was out shopping.”

Yes, everything was so perfectly “coincidental.”

“Come on, didn’t you say you wanted to take the bad man to the police station?”

Seeing her clothing was messy but still neat, Wei An tidied her up.

Xiao Qianqian’s eyes shone with gratitude as she followed Du Haibo, constantly thanking them, “It was just the right thing for you, but for me, you saved my life.”

Indeed, for Xiao Qianqian, if Wei An and Du Haibo had been any later by half a minute, she feared she would have fallen victim to the scoundrel.

Wei An didn’t hesitate further. In fact, this was the outcome she had hoped for, though she knew that even if she hadn’t just “happened” to pass by, Xiao Qianqian would still have been saved.

As they left the alley and returned to the main street, two men and a woman entered from another road.

“By the way, my name is Xiao Qianqian. What are your names—kind benefactors? Tomorrow I must come to thank you properly.”

“Oh, don’t call us benefactors. I’m Su Wei’an, and this is my brother-in-law Du Haibo. He works for the city transportation team. No need for formal thanks; I’m just glad you’re safe.”

Whether she thanked them or not wasn’t important. What mattered was remembering that it was Du Haibo who had taken action to stop the scoundrel.

Wei An couldn’t tell if Xiao Qianqian caught the hidden meaning in her words, but she nodded.

The three of them silently escorted the scoundrel to the nearest police station. As witnesses, Wei An and Du Haibo filed their statements and left.

As for Xiao Qianqian, Wei An didn’t see her again until nearly noon the next day, just before finishing work.

The banner praising “Righteous Courage” hung on the wall beside Wei An’s desk, and she felt utterly embarrassed.

She never imagined that Xiao Qianqian’s promised thanks would come in the form of a grand public presentation of a banner.

This girl was truly bold in love and hate—didn’t she worry that her own reputation might be affected?

“What’s there to fear? I’m not the one doing something immoral. I want to tell those girls who’ve been bullied but are too afraid to stand up: we are victims, so why can’t we hold our heads high with pride?”

This was what Xiao Qianqian told Wei An after they had become close and Wei An asked her what she had been thinking at the time.

Now, she was waiting by the entrance of the machinery factory until Wei An finished work before asking someone to bring Wei An out to meet her again.

When Wei An saw her, she had changed into a pink doll-collared, mid-sleeve dress, looking sweet and well-behaved.

Beside her stood a stern-looking man in his forties, propping up a nearly new bicycle, its handlebars laden with various gifts.

Seeing their similar features, Wei An guessed their relationship immediately.

“You already gave me the banner at work, why all these things too? You don’t have to be so formal. My family lacks nothing, and don’t keep this matter in your heart—I already told you, it was just a coincidence that my brother-in-law and I passed by.”

“The banner was for your workplace, but these gifts are for you personally.”

Xiao Qianqian pointed to the middle-aged man.

“This is my father. We first went to your home, but no one was there, so we came straight to your workplace.”

As for Du Haibo, Xiao Qianqian hadn’t told Wei An she'd already gone to thank him with her father.

What else could Wei An say?

She simply took the two of them home first, then stopped by the telephone office to call her parents’ workplace, urging them to rush to the state-run restaurant on Guanghua Road as quickly as possible.

Since they had brought so many gifts to thank her, she had to invite the father and daughter out for a meal, didn’t she?

“No, no, my father and I came to thank you—we can’t let you treat us to a meal,” Xiao Qianqian said quickly, waving her hand in refusal with a smile.

Xiao Wenguang, standing quietly nearby, had only responded once at the beginning when Wei An called him “Uncle Xiao” on Xiao Qianqian’s introduction. After that, he remained silent all the way.

Now, seeing Wei An call her parents and talk about inviting them to eat, he nodded in approval with quiet satisfaction.

Wei An naturally noticed his pleased expression.
