Chapter 55: Biological Mother?
Just as a patrol car happened to pass by, the man in the helmet eagerly called out for help.
"Help! I've committed robbery, arrest me right now!"
The passing patrol officers: "..."
They had seen robbers fleeing, but never a robber who threw himself into the net!
Was there something wrong with this criminal's brain?
Three minutes later, the helmet-wearing robber walked away with the patrol officers, wearing a broad smile.
The middle-aged woman loosened her fists and warmly shook Xu Xu's hand in gratitude. "Thank you so much, young lady. I honestly wouldn't have known what to do today if it weren't for you."
"It's nothing, it's just the right thing to do."
Xu Xu thought to herself that without her help... the woman probably could have snatched her belongings back all by herself.
After all, the woman possessed quite the heroic flair of a martial arts heroine.
"Oh my, look at the time, I should be delivering lunch to my old man right now." The woman glanced at her watch and immediately grew anxious. "My dear, I can't chat anymore, I have to go."
With that, the woman stood by the roadside trying to hail a cab, but after raising her hand for a long while, no taxi stopped.
Thinking that she had nothing else pressing today, Xu Xu stepped forward and offered enthusiastically, "Everyone uses ride-hailing apps nowadays... How about I drive you?"
"Oh, I couldn't possibly trouble you. Would this take up too much of your time?"
"Not at all, I'm completely free today." Xu Xu said as she took out her phone to book a ride. "Auntie, where are you headed?"
"Renhe Hospital." The woman said, unable to hold back a sigh, "My old man is just having terrible luck. As if getting crippled in a car accident wasn't enough, he's developed all sorts of complications and falls ill every other day."
Wait, a car accident and a crippled leg?
And this woman bore a certain resemblance to her...
Xu Xu paused her fingers on the ride-hailing app, an incredible thought suddenly sprouting in her mind.
"Auntie, how did your husband get into that car accident?" Xu Xu asked, keeping her composure.
Unaware of anything unusual, the woman answered directly upon hearing the question, "Sigh, every family has its own difficult scriptures to chant... My old man got hurt trying to save our unfilial daughter. Yet that daughter refuses to come back and visit her own father... Although my son claims my daughter is busy with work, I'm no fool; how could I not know that she simply doesn't want to come?"
Trying to save her daughter... and she has a son...
Xu Xu froze entirely in her tracks.
Could the woman before her actually be... her biological mother?
She had imagined what a reunion with the Su family might look like, but never under circumstances like these.
Looking at the chattering Mrs. Su, Xu Xu wanted to ask why the Su family had never sought her out, yet she feared the answer might break her heart.
"...Young lady? Young lady?"
Mrs. Su's calls pulled Xu Xu back to reality. She steadied herself and forced a tight smile. "Auntie, your family matters reminded me of my own parents, so I drifted off for a moment... The ride to the hospital has been booked, it should arrive in about three minutes."
Seeing Xu Xu's slightly dazed expression, Mrs. Su instinctively filled in the blanks, picturing a poor child who lacked familial warmth.
Thus, the look she gave Xu Xu grew even more affectionate and full of pity.
Sigh... Such a wonderful young girl, if only she were her own daughter.
The elder and the younger, each harboring their own thoughts, got into the taxi, and soon the vehicle arrived at the hospital gates.
Mrs. Su intended to go in by herself, but Xu Xu insisted on seeing things through to the end and accompanied her inside.
Although the Su family had never looked for her, perhaps due to the bond of blood, upon hearing from Xu Ya Ru that Mr. Su was gravely ill and nearing the end, Xu Xu still felt a lingering trace of worry.
"Thank you truly so much, for staying with an old woman like me..."
As Mrs. Su walked toward the hospital ward, she continuously thanked Xu Xu. However, before she could finish her expressions of gratitude, a commotion broke out from the corridor ahead, amidst which she faintly heard her old man's voice.
Mrs. Su anxiously rushed forward, only to see a doctor in a white coat directing two security guards as they dragged Su Yi'an out of the ward.
"What are you people doing?!"
Mrs. Su immediately rushed forward, placing herself in front of Su Yi'an and pulling away the security guards' hands from him.
"Old man, how are you?" Mrs. Su asked, looking at her husband with heartache.
Su Yi'an, collapsed on the floor with a pale face, gently shook his head and said, "I'm fine, don't worry."
Upon seeing this, the attending doctor sneered coldly. "What am I doing? Throwing you out, obviously!"
"Do you have any medical ethics left?!" Mrs. Su glared furiously at the doctor. "Who throws a patient right out of their ward?"
"Who told you people to skip paying your bills?" The doctor rolled his eyes unceremoniously. "This hospital doesn't take in beggars. Get lost right now!"
