Chapter 65: Recognizing Her Identity?
"Make way, please make way!"
Just as Xu Xu turned around to leave, a doctor and a nurse rushed past her, pushing a gurney with a patient toward the elevators.
Seeing this, Xu Xu quickly stepped aside, stumbling slightly and almost losing her balance.
Mother Su reacted just in time to grab Xu Xu's arm, steadying her.
"Are you... all right?"
Xu Xu looked at Mother Su and smiled. "I'm fine, thank you, ma'am."
With a polite nod, she prepared to leave, only to find that Mother Su was still holding tightly onto her arm.
Looking at Mother Su in mild confusion, she noticed the woman's gaze was fixed entirely on her forearm.
Following Mother Su's line of sight to her own arm, she saw the crescent-shaped birthmark there.
Xu Xu froze.
Mother Su, meanwhile, fought hard to steady her trembling voice, asking as calmly as possible, "Miss Xu, may I ask... how did you get that mark on your arm?"
"It's not a scar. It's my birthmark."
After a brief moment of silence, Xu Xu answered honestly.
Had Mother Su... recognized her?
A mixture of anxiety and anticipation welled up inside her.
Hearing Xu Xu's reply, Mother Su's expression shifted slightly, though she immediately began to wonder if she was reading too much into it.
How could someone as noble and refined as Miss Xu possibly be...
"When my daughter was just born, she had a birthmark exactly like that," Mother Su said, a wave of nostalgia washing over her. "Only it slowly faded as she grew up."
Hearing this, Xu Xu was taken aback.
What did that mean?
Did she not know that Xu Yaru was not her biological daughter?
Or had Xu Yaru never told the Su family about the switched-at-birth mix-up?
So... the Su family hadn't come looking for her simply because they had no idea she existed?
A sudden surge of joy flooded Xu Xu's heart. She looked up at Mother Su, an urge bubbling up inside her to reveal her true identity. "Actually, I—"
"Mom!"
Having rushed to the hospital after seeing the news online, Su Yuhang arrived before his voice did, cutting Xu Xu off mid-sentence.
Mother Su turned to see Su Yuhang running toward her in a panic and quickly grabbed his hand. "Oh, slow down! You aren't supposed to yell and run in a hospital, you child..."
"Mom, I saw what happened online. Are you okay?"
Su Yuhang anxiously checked his mother over.
"Are you hurt? Is anything bothering you?"
Mother Su smiled and shook her head. "Don't worry, Mom is fine. Oh, by the way, your father's condition has stabilized, all thanks to Miss Xu."
"Miss Xu?" Su Yuhang asked, his face a mask of confusion. "You mean that heartless doctor from the video online?"
"Thud!"
"Ouch."
Annoyed, Mother Su smacked her son on the head. "Is that any way to speak? Miss Xu is our family's savior! If it weren't for her, your father wouldn't have made it!"
"Slip of the tongue, my fault, totally my fault." Su Yuhang chuckled awkwardly, quickly patting his own mouth. "This Miss Xu is truly a good person. I'll make sure to thank her properly another day."
Mother Su laughed. "Silly boy, no need for another day. Miss Xu is right here."
With that, she turned her head toward Xu Xu standing beside them.
Because he was so worried about his mother, Su Yuhang's attention had been entirely focused on her, and he hadn't noticed Xu Xu standing nearby.
Hearing his mother's words, he quickly looked up at Xu Xu to express his gratitude. "Miss Xu, thank you for saving my father—wait, why is it you?"
Upon recognizing Xu Xu's face, Su Yuhang's expression of gratitude vanished instantly, replaced by a dark look.
Chapter 66
Seeing the sudden look of disgust on Su Yuhang's face, Xu Xu was deeply puzzled.
If she remembered correctly, this should be her very first time meeting Su Yuhang.
Why did he hate her so much?
Could it be...
Did Su Yuhang know who she was, but refused to accept her as his sister, which was why he treated her with such hostility?
"What are you doing here?" Su Yuhang demanded, staring coldly at Xu Xu. "Our Su family is not welcome!"
He had seen Xu Xu at the Xu Group before, and since her surname was Xu, she must have been sent by Su Yaru.
After the heartless things Su Yaru had said, he certainly didn't need anyone putting on a hypocritical act of false pity!
Hearing Su Yuhang's words, Xu Xu became even more certain of her guess.
So it really was like that...
"I'm sorry, I didn't come here looking for you on purpose. We just happened to run into each other today..."
Xu Xu tried to explain, but Su Yuhang didn't give her the chance.
"Who knows if it was a coincidence or on purpose? Don't take me for a fool," Su Yuhang sneered. "If you look down on our Su family for being poor, then stop coming around to bother us!"
Su Yaru had been vicious enough the other day; why would he eagerly crawl back just to accept someone's charity?
The Su family might be poor, but they still had their dignity!
"No, I don't look down on you for being poor." Xu Xu widened her eyes, sensing that Su Yuhang had misunderstood something. "I only thought..."
"Enough with the nonsense, just leave!" Su Yuhang impatiently interrupted her.
"Are you two ever going to quit? This is a hospital, not a vegetable market. Keep it down!" the nurse on duty snapped, walking over in exasperation. "If you want to argue, take it outside."
Looking embarrassed, Su Yuhang quickly apologized. "Sorry, I'll keep it down."
Only then did the nurse walk away.
Even so, the atmosphere in the hallway remained frozen.
"You brat, what is wrong with you?" Mother Su couldn't help swatting her son's arm. "Why are you being so vicious to Miss Xu? Apologize right now."
Su Yuhang turned his head away and scoffed. "Never."
"You..."
"Never mind, ma'am, don't give him a hard time," Xu Xu forced a weak smile. "It's fine, I don't mind."
Worry and guilt filled Mother Su's face. "I'm so sorry, this son of mine..."
"Mom, why are you apologizing to her?" Su Yuhang grumbled, unhappily tugging at his mother's sleeve.
Mother Su grew instantly irritated. Had this brat eaten something wrong today?
Miss Xu was their savior; how could he possibly treat her like this?
Seeing that the mother and son were about to start arguing again, Xu Xu quickly intervened. "Ma'am, please don't fight. Look, I have some things to take care of so I'll be leaving now. We can chat another time when you're free."
Unwilling to be the cause of friction between Mother Su and her son, Xu Xu quickly found an excuse to slip away.
Yet the moment she turned around, the corners of her mouth could no longer hold up even a pretense of a smile.
Did she really not mind?
Of course not.
She, too, longed for familial affection, for a mother's love, for a family to call her own.
Watching Xu Xu's retreating figure, Mother Su took a deep breath, grabbed Su Yuhang by the collar, dragged him into the stairwell, and let loose a flurry of physical discipline!
"You ungrateful little brat! How did I raise you? Is that any way to speak to our family's savior?"
"Ow! Mom! Stop hitting me! That Xu woman is really no good—issh!"
"You're still spouting nonsense, you brat!" Mother Su angrily delivered another smack to the back of her son's head. "How is Miss Xu not a good person?
When I was being mugged on the street, she was the one who helped me get my things back. Then she stayed with me at the hospital, and in the end, she even performed surgery on your dad to save his life! How on earth is she not a good person?!"
If she wasn't a good person, who else in this world could be?
"Wait, wait—she performed surgery on Dad?" Su Yuhang finally caught on that something was amiss. "Wasn't she just here to visit him?"
Mother Su looked at him speechlessly. "Miss Xu didn't even know your dad. Why would she be here to visit him?"
At this, Su Yuhang was truly dumbfounded.
"Because she wanted to save a life, Miss Xu was misunderstood, blocked by crowds of people hurling abuse... and in the end, she gets accused by you! How heartbreaking must that be for her!"
Overwhelmed with guilt and distress, Mother Su grew angrier the more she spoke, unable to resist landing yet another blow on Su Yuhang.
Subdued and thoroughly cowed, Su Yuhang shrank back. "Well... I suppose I might have misunderstood..."
Perhaps that Miss Xu just happened to work at the Xu Group and had nothing to do with Su Yaru after all?
"Duh! Of course you misunderstood!" Mother Su fumed. "And now look—you've driven her away, and we don't even have her contact information. Where am I supposed to go find her to apologize?!"
Su Yuhang cowered like a frightened quail, but hearing that, he timidly offered, "I know where she works. Mom, don't worry, I'll definitely find her and apologize."
"And thank her properly, do you hear me!"
"Fine..."
