Chapter 17: Hearing That the Son-in-Law Is Coming
When the car arrived at Jiangshui Village, Jiang Mi could see from afar that her older brother was waiting at the village entrance, riding a bicycle. It was obvious he had come to pick them up.
“Stop, stop,” Jiang Mi said hurriedly.
As soon as the car stopped, her brother Jiang Yao got off and walked over. “Little sister?”
“Brother!” Jiang Mi opened the car door and stepped out. Wen Zongfu also got out and greeted, “Big brother.”
Jiang Yao didn’t even glance at Wen Zongfu. Instead, he carefully examined his little sister, worried she might be mistreated after marrying into the city.
But upon seeing her looking fashionable and beautiful, her features refined and more spirited than when she was at home, he immediately relaxed. His expression softened as he looked at Wen Zongfu.
“Mom and Dad are waiting for you at Grandpa’s house. I’ll lead the way; you follow behind.”
Wen Zongfu nodded, and Jiang Yao mounted his old, battered bicycle again.
Jiang Mi absentmindedly watched her brother’s legs. At this moment, his legs were fine and healthy—unlike the last time she saw him in her previous life, when he was limping, his face dark and gloomy.
It was wonderful; she still had a chance to change everything.
“Missing home?” Wen Zongfu leaned in and whispered, noticing her dazed look. “You can always come back whenever you want.”
He wished his wife maintained a good relationship with her family, visiting often. Since he was frequently away driving his truck, this way she wouldn’t suffer alone in the city. He had heard that her eldest brother worked in a factory there.
Jiang Mi glanced at him without explaining. Fortunately, they soon reached her grandfather’s old residence after entering the village.
Her grandfather’s home was one of the largest and wealthiest in Jiangshui Village. Her grandfather had once been the village chief before retiring, so the old house was well maintained.
Before entering, they could already hear the cheerful laughter inside—the atmosphere was truly lively.
Jiang Mi linked arms with Wen Zongfu and said, “Let’s go in.”
The village elders were drinking tea in the ancestral home. When they heard the commotion outside, one remarked, “It must be Wen’s son-in-law arriving.”
Hearing this, they all stood up, preparing to greet him. The Wen family lived well in the city, and there was a longstanding connection between the families. The elderly patriarch highly valued this son-in-law.
So when Jiang Mi entered, many people’s eyes widened as they carefully observed the couple. Jiang Caiyuan’s eyes were practically glued to them, disbelief written all over her face.
She stared intently at Wen Zongfu, the husband she had barely met in her life, who now returned with Jiang Mi, carrying a cart full of gifts!
Why?
She couldn’t comprehend it, unable to hide the shock and anger burning in her eyes. Her gaze was so intense that Jiang Mi caught it from across the crowd.
Jiang Mi calmly looked at her cousin’s bloodshot eyes, as if Caiyuan had been deeply wounded.
She remembered this too—last time when she came back for the formal visit, it was Jiang Caiyuan who returned.
Jiang Mi had no desire to boast, so she quickly averted her gaze without concern.
After all, that was all in the past. This life was different. Besides, it wasn’t something she had taken away; it was a life Jiang Caiyuan had abandoned and pushed onto her.
Not only Jiang Mi, but even Wen Zongfu noticed a particularly sharp gaze from the crowd. Following the feeling, he met a woman’s complex and angry stare. He was momentarily stunned and puzzled.
Who was this? Why was she glaring at him?
Wen Zongfu was not known for a gentle temper. The next second, he returned the cold look, his eyes sharp and piercing.
Jiang Caiyuan froze, as if abruptly pulled back to the past days when she rarely saw Wen Zongfu. He always wore such a dark, cold expression. She suddenly felt as if she had plunged into an ice cellar, nervously averting her eyes.
That feeling… was just like when Wen Zongfu once caught her fooling around with his brother in their previous life.
