“Your Highness,” Yuwen Chengdu immediately stood and bowed, “When I was learning my skills, my master taught me that doing good and saving lives is the duty of a martial artist, not something exceptional. I require no reward.”

“Good,” Yang Guang said with evident satisfaction. “Though young, Chengdu is not only skilled in martial arts but also kind-hearted and virtuous. He draws his sword to help those in need—truly a fine son of our Great Sui. Nurture him well; he will surely become a pillar of the nation.”

“Thank you for your kind words, Your Highness.”

“Please, take a seat. Consider this place your own residence; there is no need for formality.” It was clear Yang Guang favored Yuwen Chengdu, and Yang Xiangning looked at him with admiration.

All this was observed by Yuwen Huaji, who felt deeply gratified. His son had just returned and already earned the favor of the prince in the palace. This would greatly benefit Chengdu’s future, and likewise, it was good for the entire Yuwen family.

The atmosphere of the banquet was cheerful. The group sat together like a family, free of scheming or intrigue, simply sharing everyday conversations with a joyful spirit.

When the banquet ended, Yuwen Huaji and Yuwen Chengdu took their leave first. Yang Xiangning lingered by the door, stunned for a long moment.

Then with wide eyes, she looked beseechingly at Yang Guang. He understood and waved her off, allowing her to go: “Go ahead.”

Given permission, Yang Xiangning quickly dashed out, running a few steps to catch up to Yuwen Chengdu. “Young Master Yuwen, please wait.”

Hearing her voice, Yuwen Chengdu slowly turned around and saw Yang Xiangning running toward him. He hurriedly bowed, “Princess.”

“No need for formalities, Young Master Yuwen,” Yang Xiangning smiled warmly at him.

Nearby, Yuwen Huaji, ever perceptive, bowed slightly to Yang Xiangning, “Princess, I shall take my leave now and wait for Chengdu at the door.”

“Very well,” Yang Xiangning nodded, and Yuwen Huaji departed.

Left standing, Yuwen Chengdu was puzzled. “I wonder what matter the Princess wished to discuss?”

---

“You are my lifesaver. I just wanted to express my gratitude; there is no urgent matter,” Yang Xiangning said, usually poised but somewhat flustered and shy before Yuwen Chengdu.

“Princess, there is no need for thanks. Drawing my sword to help those in need is what Chengdu ought to do. On that day, not knowing your identity, I may have been impolite. I beg your pardon.” Yuwen Chengdu bowed slightly, showing respect.

Yang Xiangning found his formality excessive and cumbersome. “Young Master Yuwen, no need for such deference. Nonetheless, I must thank you. I have no way to repay you, but should you serve at court in the future, I will surely praise you before my father.”

“Thank you, Princess. I am deeply honored.” Yuwen Chengdu expressed his gratitude.

Yang Xiangning knew a talented youth like him would surely enter officialdom. Her father, Yuwen Huaji, and her elder brother, Prince Yang Guang, would pave the way for him. This hero’s future was boundless.

After a brief exchange, they parted ways. Yuwen Chengdu left the prince’s mansion, and Yang Xiangning returned to the hall.

“Brother Emperor,” Yang Xiangning ran to Yang Guang with a smile, “I never imagined the hero I had your guards search for was right here. He is the Chancellor’s son. I was right; his attire that day hinted he was no ordinary person.”

“Yes, we owe him thanks for saving you. Otherwise, who knows what harm might have come to you.” Yang Guang tapped her head lightly. “You’re always so mischievous. One careless moment and you run off the palace grounds. This time you nearly suffered greatly. Will you dare again?”

Yang Guang cared deeply for his little sister and was naturally worried upon hearing of her near danger outside the palace.

Yang Xiangning, knowing his concern, coquettishly shook his arm, “I know. I won’t dare again. Please don’t be angry, Brother.”

Her charm worked well; Yang Guang could not stay angry. He sighed helplessly, “You must remember this lesson and take your safety seriously.”

“Yes, Brother, your teaching is noted.” She bowed slightly in respect.

Yang Guang said no more. Night had grown late, so he arranged for her safe escort back to the palace.

Later, the Yuwen household received many rewards — some from the Prince’s mansion, all for Yuwen Chengdu. Yang Guang cherished his little sister, and since Chengdu saved her, he naturally bestowed many gifts upon him.

The palace also sent abundant gold, silver, and jewels, all bestowed by the princess. Though Yuwen Chengdu declined everything, they still exerted themselves to show their gratitude.

Soon, praise for the eldest Yuwen son spread far and wide. The court and the entire realm heard of his unmatched bravery in saving the princess and spoke highly of him. Even Yuwen Huaji received imperial commendations for his excellent parenting.

“Chancellor, bring your eldest son before me one day. I wish to see this young hero for myself,” Emperor Yang Jian said from the dragon throne near the end of a court session.

Yuwen Huaji promptly rose and bowed, “Thank you for Your Majesty’s grace.”

He and Yang Guang had been considering how to introduce Yuwen Chengdu to the emperor for an official post, but the emperor had spoken first. This was surely thanks to Yang Xiangning frequently mentioning the young hero to her father, as well as much discussion in court.

The next day, Yuwen Huaji brought Yuwen Chengdu to court.

“This must be the eldest son of the Yuwen family?” Some ministers were curious about his true appearance. The princess often described him as handsome, with sword-like brows and bright eyes, a refined young gentleman skilled in martial arts. After his display with the sword, he was indeed fair-featured and did not resemble a typical warrior but rather a pampered scion of a noble family.

“Indeed. The young master has just returned from training. Chengdu, come and greet the uncles.” Regardless of relationships, one always showed proper respect in court.

Upon seeing Yuwen Chengdu, those eager to curry favor with the chancellor swarmed forward, and Yuwen Huaji graciously entertained them.

Only the Crown Prince’s faction remained indifferent. Everyone knew Yuwen Huaji was allied with Prince Yang Guang. Though the Crown Prince and Yang Guang appeared amicable, their factions were bitter enemies. Yang Guang was the Crown Prince’s greatest threat, and this caused animosity between their supporters. Naturally, they showed no enthusiasm for Yuwen Chengdu.

“Chengdu greets all uncles.” Yuwen Chengdu bowed to the assembly.
