Chapter 6: Godmother?
Today was Fang Lian’s first weekend at university. Normally, there would be no break during military training, but because there was a welcome party that evening, the freshmen were granted a day of respite.
At eight in the morning, Fang Lian woke early to wash up. Despite her efforts to be quiet, the sounds she made still woke her three roommates.
Li Li, the eldest and most robust of the dormmates, yawned and asked, “Xiao Lian, it’s a day off today. Aren’t you going to catch up on some sleep?”
Fang Lian smiled awkwardly, “Li Jie, I have to go out and take care of something.”
She couldn’t neglect the task assigned by Yan Xuan; since the day before, it had been on her mind constantly. She had even researched numerous car-buying guides.
“By the way, Li Jie, you’re from Nanjiang, right?”
“Why?”
“Could you accompany me to the auto mall? I’m unfamiliar with the area.”
“You want to buy a car!?”
Li Li’s exclamation startled the other two roommates awake. All three sat upright, eyes wide, staring at Fang Lian.
They were all freshmen; while they were still pondering phone and computer specs, Fang Lian was already picking out her ride.
The gap between people was truly enviable.
“What price range are you thinking of for the car?”
Li Li leaned closer with keen interest, and the other two quickly joined in, offering their own advice.
Seventeen- or eighteen-year-old girls rarely delved deeply into cars; their suggestions mostly revolved around entertainment gossip.
“How about you get a XXX? My brother drives one…”
“XXX seems good; isn’t it advertised a lot in that movie?”
“XXX brand is good too; it’s endorsed by XX.”
Regardless of gender, the joy of playing the “expert” was the same, even if they weren’t sure their advice was reliable.
Fang Lian grew irritated and cut in, “Why don’t you all just come with me?”
“Sure!”
The three answered in unison, quickly changing clothes and following Fang Lian out the door.
Having a wealthy roommate might come in handy someday!
At 5:30 in the afternoon, Fang Lian met Yan Xuan at the cafeteria, spreading a large stack of car-buying documents before him.
“Godfather, what do you think?”
Yan Xuan still hadn’t allowed Fang Lian to advance the formality of their address.
Usually, when Fang Lian called him “Godfather,” Yan Xuan just took it as a joke. If she called him “Dad” outright, it would make him uncomfortable.
“I’ve told you, I trust your taste.”
More than the documents, Yan Xuan was intrigued by Fang Lian’s outfit today.
Her long hair, dyed a soft pinkish-white, was braided into a three-strand plait draped over her left shoulder—a hairstyle sometimes called “dangerous wife.”
She wore a fresh white-and-green top; the gentle curve formed by her chest pressing against the desk was subtle but noticeable, a delicate silhouette. Around her waist was a band of cherry-pink silk. Her pure white skirt fell just below the knees, revealing shapely calves and bare feet adorned with woven sandals. Her toenails were painted a youthful shade of green, peI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
