Chapter Thirteen: Rejection
She furrowed her brows slightly.
If she could turn back time, she would definitely refuse to be Li Mu’s woman. She wanted to break off the engagement—even if they had already been intimate, she would still end it!
Jiang Wan took a deep breath and looked at Li Mu. “Li Mu, I’m not planning to marry you. I want to call off the engagement.”
“Hm?” Li Mu raised an eyebrow, curiosity etched across his face.
“I can’t stand someone like you.”
“Can’t stand me?” Li Mu’s eyes sparkled with curiosity as he pointed to himself. “What exactly can’t you stand?”
“I can’t stand someone like you. My man has to be clean and handsome.”
Li Mu frowned slightly upon hearing this. “You want someone like that? Your family is so wealthy, you must have plenty of suitors without even trying.”
“I…” Jiang Wan forced herself to relax. “The person I want, whether rich or not, just needs to be responsible, have good character, be tidy, and be there for me whenever I need him.”
“Obviously, you are not that person!” he retorted.
“Oh?” Li Mu’s gaze turned serious. “You can’t judge a book by its cover. We’ve only just met, and you already think you know what I’m like?”
Jiang Wan sneered coldly. “I’ve heard that line from many people. I’d rather trust myself than believe in an impossible future. Even if it’s the end of the world, I won’t believe it.”
After saying that, Jiang Wan took a check from her pocket and handed it to Li Mu.
“This is six million. Take it and get out of my sight. Don’t ever appear in front of me again! We have nothing to do with each other!”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Li Mu slipped the check into his pocket, smiling warmly at Jiang Wan.
“In that case, I’ll take the money. Consider it your grandfather’s medical fee. And don’t think you can just sever ties with me. If your old man finds out, do you think he’ll be angry?”
Jiang Wan frowned slightly at Li Mu’s words.
Indeed, her grandfather would be suspicious if Li Mu didn’t come to see him.
Moreover, the old man had just recovered and still needed Li Mu’s treatment, so Li Mu couldn’t leave for now.
“So, what do you want to do?”
Li Mu smiled and pointed to himself. “We were supposed to pretend to be a couple for a month at your grandfather’s request. No matter what, we have to keep it up for that month, right?”
Jiang Wan nodded slightly. Indeed, to maintain the status quo, they needed to do so.
Besides, her grandfather was just recovering. If he knew she had cut ties with Li Mu, he would surely be upset.
“And after that month, will you leave on your own?”
“Maybe after a month, you’ll start to like me. Then you might not want to leave.”
Jiang Wan frowned. “I could never like you. You can forget that!”
Then, as if remembering something, she looked at Li Mu.
“How about this? Let’s make a bet.”
“What kind of bet?” Li Mu asked curiously.
“If you can earn a hundred million yuan in one month, I’ll agree to marry you. The wedding will proceed as planned. How about that?”
Li Mu smiled. “Alright then, I accept your bet! One hundred million in one month? That’s not hard!”
Jiang Wan eyed his serious expression suspiciously.
She deliberately set him up to fail—saving a hundred million in a month is no easy feat.
Besides, his family wasn’t wealthy. It would be nearly impossible for him to gather that amount without her help.
Thinking this, her mood lightened considerably.
If Li Mu could really save that much, it would prove he was no ordinary man. Even a pauper managing to save a hundred million would mean someone was backing him.
It would also mean her grandfather was right—Li Mu was a decent person.
As they left the café, Li Mu suddenly remembered something. “I want to know—who put that sculpture in your mansion?”
Jiang Wan thought for a moment, scratching her head. “I think my uncle arranged for someone to fix it. Why?”
Li Mu’s lips curved into a slight smile. Jiang Wan’s uncle—could that be Jiang Yusheng?
He had looked anxious when he saw the old man’s condition.
Indeed… appearances can be deceiving. In wealthy families, many schemes unfold behind the scenes—even within the Jiang family.
However, Li Mu had no intention of telling Jiang Wan the truth.
“Nothing. I just think that sculpture is quite special.”
Jiang Wan found Li Mu’s words strange but did not press further—after all, what’s done is done.
“By the way, you said my grandfather has been poisoned for a long time. How did you figure that out? And how do you know what kind of poison it is?”
Hearing Jiang Wan’s question, Li Mu began to explain.
“This poison is actually quite common in the north. Some researchers there studied it. Ask your grandfather if he’s ever been to the north. If he has, be cautious—someone from that region might want to harm him.”
“Moreover, the person responsible holds a significant position in your household.”
Jiang Wan’s face changed dramatically. “Are you suspecting someone close to us?”
Li Mu nodded. “Yes. You should investigate quietly and not let it become public knowledge. It’s best not to spread word of your grandfather’s condition.”
Jiang Wan understood Li Mu’s meaning well. As someone who upheld half the Jiang family’s responsibilities, she was not foolish.
Once Li Mu pointed it out, she realized the problem and would try to solve it.
Yet, the more she thought about it, the more uneasy she felt—as if a terrifying presence lingered in her mind, impossible to shake.
Someone from their mansion? Or their family?
She bit her lip and sighed. “Whatever the case, thank you for today.”
Li Mu nodded slightly. “Don’t worry. You’re my fiancée. How could I not help you?”
“Just be a little less cold to me.”
At these words, Jiang Wan’s cheeks flushed bright red. She quickly got into the car. “Aren’t you afraid I won’t let you in if you speak like that?”
Li Mu shrugged, as if he were the scared one. Holding a five-million-yuan check in hand, was he supposed to be afraid? What a joke!
As they chatted, Li Mu suddenly sensed something was wrong.
He turned to see a truck speeding toward them, seemingly aiming to crash into them.
A chill ran through Li Mu’s body.
That vehicle was clearly targeting them!
