Chapter Ten: The Elusive Kindred Spirit

At first, the original owner was completely disheartened, but ever since meeting the emperor in person, her heart had been entirely devoted to him.
“I really want to ask the emperor if he has Nuwa’s contact information—how else could he have been crafted to look so perfect?”
Seeing Feng Yu was a lifelong mistake.
Fortunately, she was clear-headed enough never to be misled by mere appearance!
“Mother, mother, continue the story tonight,” Feng Wuchen tugged on Jiang Daiyin’s sleeve, his voice soft and sweet, eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Several little maids nodded eagerly, their faces full of expectation.
“Alright, Wuchen, wash up now, Mother will come right away.”
Jiang Daiyin smiled to herself—how did she end up playing the role of a kindergarten teacher?
“Yesterday, we left off where the river god ate a poisonous apple and accidentally turned into a frog. In his anger, he cursed Snow White so that if she touched an axe, she would fall into an eternal sleep. Snow White became the Sleeping Beauty. The wicked queen, upon discovering the sleeping beauty, transformed into a fierce dragon and imprisoned her in a cave.”
“The seven gourd brothers realized Snow White had not returned and resolved to find her. Passing through a peach orchard, they were stopped by a monkey. To escape, the seven gourd brothers transformed into seven dwarfs. They found the axe Snow White had dropped and used it to slay the snake spirit and scorpion spirit sent by the dragon.”
“The queen was truly evil!” Chunyu’s heart tightened with sympathy for Snow White’s plight.
“And then?”
“Then, when the seven dwarfs went to bathe by the river, a man came with a cow and hid their clothes. Without their clothes, how could the dwarfs rescue the princess? To find out what happened next, wait for the next story.”
Jiang Daiyin clapped her hands, signaling the bedtime story was over for the night.
“Ah, that’s it?”
Everyone looked unsatisfied, wanting more.
“I’ll continue tomorrow.” Jiang Daiyin tucked Feng Wuchen in and smiled gently.
“Okay.” Feng Wuchen obediently responded.
[Affection for Feng Wuchen +10]
Yes! Another day full of rewards!
Humming a tune, Jiang Daiyin returned to her chambers, only to suddenly stop when she saw someone sitting upright on the couch.
“Sorry, I think I came to the wrong room.”
She instinctively turned to leave.
“Stop!” Feng Yu put down his book and looked up, a faint sharpness in his voice.
Jiang Daiyin’s mind raced wildly.
Why was he here? Could it be he wanted to sleep with her?
Wasn’t he supposed to have severed all emotional ties?
She struggled but turned back, kneeling and bowing.
“Your Majesty, your humble servant greets you. May I ask what your honorable business is?”
Feng Yu gazed at her intently. The story she told about the seven gourd brothers rescuing Snow White was quite amusing—he’d never heard anything like it before.
“How could I have not known before that the empress is such a talented storyteller?”
“Just some idle tales I picked up from reading too many storybooks,” Jiang Daiyin replied, perfectly embodying the expression of a fake smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

This sneaky emperor even eavesdrops on people’s conversations.
“Hmm, I’m curious now. Empress, tell me one of your stories!”
Feng Yu asked with an air of entitlement. Jiang Daiyin suppressed the urge to slap his face, pursed her lips, lifted her chin, and began to tell the tale smoothly.
“There was a little monkey who felt a chill on his bottom. Later, he discovered his tail was missing. He looked around cautiously and asked, ‘Who are you?’ A voice replied, ‘I am Tailcutter.’”
Feng Yu: ........
What kind of horror story is this? It’s so cold and dull!
The chill turned him into an ice sculpture instantly.
“Your Majesty, the story is finished.”
Feng Yu pressed his lips together. Is this really love or not? It’s so obvious.
“Hmm, the empress’s story is... quite good. From now on, we won’t need to stockpile ice in summer; the empress can just tell a few stories instead.”
Jiang Daiyin felt indignant. Is this what they call a naturally gifted player?
She had stayed up late memorizing witty lines but still couldn’t compare to his casual comment.
But this tone—so mocking and sarcastic—it’s like living in a gossip maze.
“Your Majesty is too kind.”
Feng Yu: ..... Does that sound like a compliment to you?
“It’s late. Empress, come attend to me while I rest.”
“All right, Your Majesty, please take care on your way,” Jiang Daiyin blurted out almost immediately.
Then she pressed her lips tightly.
Damn it, why did she say it so quickly?
“Seems the empress is not happy to see me?” Feng Yu narrowed his eyes dangerously.
Usually, when he came to Fengyi Palace, Jiang Daiyin was so happy she wanted to announce it to the world. Now, what happened? Did she take some wrong medicine?
Very unwelcome! You should hurry and attend to your official duties!
Though she thought this inside, Jiang Daiyin still had to put on an innocent face.
“I dare not, Your Majesty. Perhaps I misheard you.”
Still pretending?
Feng Yu was a little annoyed by her act and became even more resolute not to get emotionally involved.
“It’s late, so let’s rest quickly, shall we?”
He stood up and spread his arms, waiting for Jiang Daiyin to undress.
Jiang Daiyin frantically brainstormed a countermeasure. She definitely didn’t want to give herself to a scoundrel—no way!
“Ah! Your Majesty, Wuchen is calling for me. He must be scared during the night. I will go check on him.”
After saying this, she hurriedly bowed and fled like the wind.
Watching her retreating back, a storm brewed on Feng Yu’s face, as if he were about to explode with anger.

Wuchen never called for her!
Does Jiang Daiyin really not want to stay with him?
He stubbornly refused to believe it.
Fulin Hai was terrified and at a loss, but when the emperor walked out with a solemn face, he hurried to catch up.
“Your Majesty, are you returning to the Nourishment Hall?”
“Go see the Tenth Prince.”
Fulin Hai: ?
Is he going to see the Tenth Prince? Or the Empress?
He hurried after him. In the side hall, Jiang Daiyin still didn’t know that Feng Yu was at odds with her. She was talking with Chunyu.
“Your Highness, the Tenth Prince didn’t call you. He’s sleeping soundly.”
“The emperor came all the way here, and you’re hiding from him!”
Chunyu was spreading bedding on a nearby couch as Jiang Daiyin requested.
She looked puzzled.
Once, the empress had tried every trick to see the emperor even once.
Now that he was right in front of her, she was unwilling.
Jiang Daiyin yawned lazily. “The emperor’s time should be devoted to the people, not wasted on me.”
“The emperor exhausts himself for the people. We should be understanding and let him rest well.”
In truth, she had no desire to attend him in bed.
“Empress, you truly possess a generous heart,” Fulin Hai couldn’t help but admire.
Feng Yu suddenly felt he had been narrow-minded and conceded that the empress was right; he shouldn’t waste time on such matters.
Those around him only saw his wealth and status but never knew of his ardent passion for the people.
Have you seen the sun at four in the morning?
He has.
Yet no one has ever understood him.
At this moment, it felt as if he had found a kindred spirit.
Thinking of Jiang Daiyin’s clever and lively expression, his heart softened.
“Return to the Nourishment Hall.”
“Yes!” Fulin Hai felt a surge of excitement.
He even felt like he could get up in the middle of the night and practice a few martial arts sets.
