Chapter 31: Grandmother Consents to Seeking Medical Treatment Abroad
Shen Suining went to her grandmother's hospital room.
Coincidentally, her grandmother was awake. This filled Shen Suining with immense joy. Over the past five years, her grandmother had been slipping into longer periods of unconsciousness; although she still woke up every day, the timing had become increasingly erratic. This caused Shen Suining great anxiety, as she truly feared that her grandmother’s condition was steadily deteriorating.
However, seeing her grandmother awake now, Shen Suining could clearly sense that her spirits were quite good. Fighting back tears, she walked over and sat down by the bedside.
"Grandma."
As she spoke, her throat tightened with a sharp, aching bitterness. She took a quiet, deep breath, struggling to keep from sobbing.
Her grandmother looked at her with loving eyes, reached out to touch her hand, and said, "Suisui, why have you lost weight again? Your face has become so thin." She was filled with heartache.
Shen Suining shook her head and replied, "Not at all, Grandma. I haven't even returned to my pre-pregnancy weight yet." She wasn't thin at all.
Her grandmother insisted, "You can't go back to how you were then. You’re too thin; I’m afraid you’ll blow away in the wind."
Shen Suining quickly raised her arm and said, "How could that be? I'm quite sturdy now." Having always had a larger frame, she had spent the past year working with her team on various archaeological digs, which had significantly increased her strength. She could clearly feel that her physical condition was much better than before.
Her grandmother studied her face carefully. Seeing that she truly looked healthy and full of vitality, she finally felt at ease. She held Shen Suining’s hand and said, "I just can’t stop worrying about you, Grandma."
Hearing this, Shen Suining’s heart sank instantly. Whenever her grandmother spoke like this, it gave her an ominous feeling, as if she were delivering final instructions or preparing to leave her at any moment. She couldn't bear to hear it.
She interrupted immediately, "Grandma, I am doing very well. As long as you are healthy, that is all that matters to me."
Knowing that Shen Suining hated hearing such disheartening talk, her grandmother sighed and let the matter drop. She looked at her and asked, "Did you come alone? What about Jiangjiang and Lang..."
Shen Suining cut her off, "They are busy, so I didn't have them come." Fearing that her grandmother might notice something, she immediately lowered her eyes. She dared not let her grandmother know that Jiang Runlang had actually targeted her to coerce her, nor did she want her to know that Jiangjiang was not her daughter—that the child hated and despised her.
Yet, despite all her efforts to hide it, her grandmother still caught a glimpse of the truth. Her grandmother opened her mouth as if to ask something, but in the end, said nothing. Shen Suining knew that she was like an open book before her grandmother; her emotions were always easy to read.
Switching the subject, she looked up and asked, "Grandma, a friend of mine said they know of a brilliant team abroad that can cure your illness. It would just require you to go overseas for treatment. Would you be willing to go?"
Just now, when her grandmother asked about Jiang Runlang and Jiangjiang, Shen Suining had made up her mind: she had to get her grandmother out of the country. She simply could not trust a madman like Jiang Runlang. If he could hide her grandmother once, he could do it again. Even though Jiang Zhe had assured her that Jiang Runlang wouldn't be able to find her—and she trusted Jiang Zhe—she still dared not take the risk.
The moment Jiang Runlang had gripped her throat last night, she had realized one thing clearly: his feelings for her had long since vanished. Or perhaps, he had never truly loved her; he only possessed an inexplicable, obsessive desire for her. Even now, with no love left and having already chosen a new mother for Jiangjiang, he still refused to let her go. Therefore, she could not leave her grandmother in a position of constant danger.
Upon hearing this, her grandmother looked at her with concern. "Suisui, has something happened? Is the Jiang family bullying you?" Even though she lived in the hospital and hadn't seen firsthand how the Jiang family treated her granddaughter, she wasn't foolish; she could guess.
Over the past five years, the Jiang family had rarely visited. Only Jiang Runlang had accompanied her in the beginning, but later, claiming that Shen Suining's pregnancy made it unsuitable for her to run to the hospital, even Shen Suining's own visits had become less frequent. Her grandmother couldn't help but feel that Shen Suining was being restricted by the Jiangs.
This often made her hate herself for being a useless burden holding Shen Suining back. She wished she could leave this world so that Shen Suining could have a lighter life. Yet, every time Shen Suining visited, she would visibly relax, and her grandmother could clearly feel how much the girl relied on her. Because of this, her grandmother never dared to act on her thoughts; she was truly afraid that if Shen Suining reached a breaking point, she would have no one left to turn to. Her Suisui was already pitiful enough; she didn't want her to endure any more.
Meeting her grandmother's worried gaze, Shen Suining smiled and shook her head. "No, Grandma. I just heard about this and couldn't wait to tell you. My friend says there is a very high chance of a cure. I want you to try it."
If she could really cure her grandmother, Shen Suining would be truly happy.
Her grandmother replied, "I'm just an old bag of bones; to go abroad for treatment, how much would that cost? Suisui, it's not necessary." It truly wasn't worth it.
Shen Suining couldn't bear to hear such words. She urged, "Grandma! No one is more important than you! I'm working now; I can earn money. I just want you to be healthy and live to be a hundred, so you can stay with me for a long time."
Finally, unable to hold it in any longer, she began to sob. Afraid to let her grandmother see her tears, she lowered her head, and large droplets fell, soaking the hospital bedsheets.
Heartbroken, her grandmother lovingly patted her head and compromised, "Alright, alright, I'll listen to you, Suisui. If you want me to go abroad for treatment, then I will."
Shen Suining broke into a tearful smile. She sniffled, quickly wiped her face, and said, "It's a deal, then, Grandma. You promised, so you can't go back on your word."
