Ruan Mianmian returned to her seat, and Jian Yanzhi glanced at her.
He asked, “Where did you go?”
Jian Yanzhi’s gaze lingered between her and the waiter who had just walked away. Ruan Mianmian suppressed a laugh and feigned nonchalance as she replied,
“It was nothing.”
Jian Yanzhi’s face held a skeptical look, clearly unconvinced, but he didn’t press further. He simply nodded quietly.
Before long, a young woman in a waitress uniform, striking in appearance, approached them.
“Hello, I’m Wu Ketian. May I ask who was looking for me?”
Wu Ketian wore a poised smile, but on closer inspection, her eyes brimmed with disdain and aloofness.
Though Ruan Mianmian had seen her earlier that day, the dim lighting of the bar now meant Wu Ketian probably hadn’t recognized her.
“Oh? It’s really you!”
Ruan Mianmian feigned delight, rising from her seat and walking over to Wu Ketian. After studying her for a moment, she smiled and said,
“It’s me. We met in the office today!”
“Oh? Director Ruan?”
Wu Ketian’s expression shifted to one of surprise, tinged with embarrassment. She quickly lowered her head and replied awkwardly, “What a coincidence!”
“Are you working part-time here?”
Ruan Mianmian gave her a quick once-over and praised, “You really are beautiful—no matter what you wear, it looks good on you. Even this unflattering uniform seems designer on you.”
Wu Ketian pressed her lips together and said softly, “I’m sorry, Director Ruan. I just do some part-time work here when I have free time.”
“That’s great, really,” Ruan Mianmian said quickly, spotting Wu Ketian’s discomfort and offering her a reassuring smile. “There’s nothing wrong with it. The environment here seems nice, and it’s good to make a bit of extra money. Don’t worry about it.”
Wu Ketian looked grateful. She could tell Ruan Mianmian’s manner was genuinely gentle, her eyes free from contempt for the job, and she felt a rush of relief.
Just then, Jian Yanzhi asked, “What’s going on? Is she your friend?”
Ruan Mianmian’s eyes flickered as she led Wu Ketian over to the table.
“Let me introduce you.”
Ruan Mianmian had Wu Ketian sit beside her, then gestured to Jian Yanzhi and said,
“This is our company’s general manager, Mr. Jian, and that’s Mr. Jian’s friend—you know him too, he’s your boss here.”

Wu Ketian quickly nodded respectfully. “Hello, Mr. Jian. Hello, Boss.”
Chen Ci took the opportunity to glance over and smiled. “Miss Ruan, you know her?”
Ruan Mianmian glanced back at Wu Ketian and smiled. “She’s my friend. Mr. Chen, I hope you’ll look after our Ketian in the future.”
Wu Ketian was taken aback, never expecting Ruan Mianmian to say such a thing.
After all, she was just a humble part-timer, ordered about by everyone here—who would’ve thought she’d get a chance to be introduced in front of Mr. Chen himself?
Chen Ci, hearing this, was quick to play along and smiled,
“So she’s a friend of Miss Ruan’s? It would be such a waste for her to remain a part-timer.”
With that, he called over the floor manager and instructed him,
“This Miss Wu is working here part-time. From today, make her a full-time staff member.”
Wu Ketian was delighted, but quickly shook her head and replied,
“No need for that, Mr. Chen. I’ve already found a new job, so I won’t be here much longer. Thank you, Mr. Chen, thank you, Miss Ruan, but I won’t trouble you.”
It was the first time Chen Ci had taken the initiative to do a good deed, only to be refused outright. With nothing more to say, he looked at Ruan Mianmian.
Ruan Mianmian thought for a moment as she looked at Wu Ketian—indeed, there was no need to press the matter.
“All right, then. If you ever want to switch to a full-time position, just let Mr. Chen know—he won’t go back on his word.”
Ruan Mianmian finished with a wink at Chen Ci.
He caught on immediately and laughed, “Of course, I’ve said it now, I won’t take it back.”
Wu Ketian looked grateful. She turned to Ruan Mianmian and said, “If there’s nothing else, Director Ruan, I should get back to work.”
“All right, go ahead. I only called you over because I thought I’d mistaken you for someone else. Didn’t expect it really was you.”
Ruan Mianmian said politely, “You go on.”
After Wu Ketian left, Jian Yanzhi’s expression became rather subtle.
In his memory, Ruan Mianmian wasn’t the type to greet acquaintances, especially not people who could barely be called her friends.
So he asked, “She’s your friend? How come I’ve never met her?”
Ruan Mianmian was momentarily taken aback, then replied suspiciously, “Do you know all of my friends?”
Jian Yanzhi considered this, then countered, “Isn’t she?”
Ruan Mianmian withdrew her gaze and didn’t answer. Instead, she looked at Jian Yanzhi with interest and asked,
“By the way, is that your type?”

As soon as she spoke, even Chen Ci’s eyes took on a teasing glint. The two of them looked at Jian Yanzhi in unison, waiting for his reply.
Jian Yanzhi set down his wine glass and retorted, “How is she my type?”
“Oh?”
Ruan Mianmian drew out the syllable, her expression one of gleeful mischief.
Jian Yanzhi found her words inexplicably vexing and pressed, “What are you getting at?”
“Nothing at all,” Ruan Mianmian replied, changing the subject as she turned to Chen Ci. “The desserts here are really good. Could you pack some for me to take home later?”
Chen Ci, still amused by the scene, nodded. “Of course.”
Jian Yanzhi was so irritated that he fell silent.
Just then, a man in black, looking every bit the bodyguard, strode over and whispered something into Chen Ci’s ear.
Whatever he heard seemed to surprise Chen Ci. “Are you sure Young Master Jiang is here in person?”
Ruan Mianmian, sitting close by, heard everything clearly. She immediately looked at Chen Ci, her face mirroring his astonishment.
Young Master Jiang—wasn’t that Jiang Ce?
Why had he come here?
And from Chen Ci’s reaction, it seemed he was quite familiar with Jiang Ce.
Jian Yanzhi, meanwhile, looked confused, as if he hadn’t caught on.
Chen Ci continued, “Tell him to wait a moment. I’ll be right there.”
After instructing the bodyguard, Chen Ci turned to Jian Yanzhi and Ruan Mianmian. “Sorry, a friend just arrived. You both know him, so I won’t play host. Drink whatever you like—I’ll be back soon.”
Jian Yanzhi nodded. “Go ahead, don’t worry about us.”
As he left, Chen Ci winked at Jian Yanzhi, signaling him to seize the opportunity.
Ruan Mianmian’s mind was entirely on Jiang Ce and she didn’t notice the exchange of glances.
After Chen Ci left, Jian Yanzhi explained, “Chen Ci has connections everywhere—he’s got friends all over. Don’t be surprised.”
Ruan Mianmian nodded slowly. “It doesn’t matter to me.”
