Chapter 10: My Wife Reigns Supreme
Yu Zhile could never bear to see a girl cry, especially not the girl he liked.
Yes—a girl!
Though Qin Haiyu was already a mother, having given birth to a child, she was only twenty-five. On the surface, she still looked like a maiden in her prime, and now, as she threw herself into his arms, moved to tears, she resembled nothing more than a sentimental young girl.
Yu Zhile was surprised by her appearance, but this side of Qin Haiyu, so genuine and emotional, was even more endearing and charming than the one he had once secretly admired.
Watching her cry in such an adorable way, Yu Zhile couldn’t help but want to laugh.
“All right, all right, you’re a mother now, yet you’re still crying like this. Our baby doesn’t even cry as much as you do!” he teased, ruffling her hair, which was silky and pleasant to the touch.
Qin Haiyu pouted, raising her tear-stained face to look at him, her eyes glistening like a wronged child. “You’ve changed, darling. Before, you could never bear to see me cry, but now you don’t even comfort me when I do!”
“Yes, yes, let me think how to make it up to you!” Yu Zhile was both exasperated and amused. Soon, he had an idea. He picked up his guitar and struck a few chords, improvising a playful song:
“Wife, wife, mua—
One on the left, mua,
One on the right, mua,
One more on the lips, mua…”
He had half a mind to steal a few kisses from her to match the song, but lost his nerve at the last moment.
As he sang and played, Qin Haiyu couldn’t hold back her laughter.
“Pfft—what on earth are you singing, husband? Hahaha!”
A moment ago, she had been genuinely moved to tears. Now, Yu Zhile’s rendition of “Wife, You’re the Best in the World” had her giggling uncontrollably.
“Wife, wife, hugs—
Princess hugs for you,
Flying hugs,
Spinning hugs…”
Yu Zhile rapped on, never imagining that this silly pop song, which had once made his single self cringe, would one day serve him so well.
And, truth be told, he performed it with gusto.
“My wife is so beautiful,
Her smile so dazzling,
A ponytail so pretty,
A dress so lovely…”
By now, Qin Haiyu was so happy she could fly. She wiped away her tears, her lips curving uncontrollably into a wide smile, her entire face aglow with happiness.
Her eyes sparkled with infatuation as she gazed at Yu Zhile, her expression full of adoration, as if to say, “My husband is so handsome when he improvises! And this song is so much fun!”
“My wife is the best,
My idol, no less,
My kisses are yours alone,
And this song is for you alone!”
Yu Zhile finished the catchy tune and stopped, smiling at Qin Haiyu. “Well? Does this count as comforting you?”
“No!” Qin Haiyu pouted, her lips soft and moist. “You didn’t give me any kisses or hugs!”
Hey now! Are you trying to seduce me?
Yu Zhile felt a little nervous again. He looked at her deliberately pouting lips, then threw caution to the wind and planted a big kiss on her.
Qin Haiyu, delighted as a child, jumped up and spread her arms. “I want a hug too!”
Yu Zhile realized she was indeed a mischievous little enchantress.
How could she, a mother, still act like a girl who had just fallen in love?
He sighed, half amused, half exasperated. “You’re harder to please than the baby! Next time, I’ll hug you again, but for now, let’s learn ‘A Little Happiness’ together. If you fail at the next competition and get eliminated, I’ll be too embarrassed to tell people you’re my wife!”
“Darling, are you saying you’re ashamed of me?” Qin Haiyu’s pitiful expression appeared in an instant. Moments ago, she was flying with joy; now, she looked utterly dejected.
“If you don’t learn the song properly, I really will be ashamed!” Yu Zhile replied.
Qin Haiyu immediately sat down, gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, and beamed, “I’ll learn with you right now, hehe…”
Her change of mood was simply unbeatable!
Yu Zhile looked at her with new eyes—so this was the real Qin Haiyu! How could she be so playful and adorable? Compared to the pure and quiet girl in his memories, she was like a different person altogether.
Perhaps she only revealed this side of herself to him, letting her true nature shine—playful and coquettish.
…
Half an hour later.
Qin Haiyu had already learned to sing “A Little Happiness.” Her voice was truly lovely, but Yu Zhile noticed that her breath control was a little weak. If she were to sing into a microphone, the frequent and heavy breaths would be very noticeable.
It might be an issue with her lung capacity, maybe even a result of childbirth, so she ran out of breath quickly and had to take short, frequent breaths while singing.
He said, “Honey, let me teach you a little trick.”
Qin Haiyu’s beautiful eyes fixed on him. “What trick?”
“You’re a bit short of breath when you sing, and your lung capacity isn’t great. So when you need to breathe, just move the microphone a bit farther away, casually, so the audience won’t hear those frequent, obvious breathing sounds.”
“Wow! You’re so professional, darling!” Qin Haiyu exclaimed. “Even the judges on ‘I’m a Star Singer’ aren’t as sharp as you! I didn’t realize my breath was so lacking when I sing. Sometimes, after two or three lines, I feel completely out of breath!”
Yu Zhile said seriously, “A moment on stage takes ten years of practice! You haven’t trained systematically for too long, so you’ve regressed a bit.”
“You’re scolding me!” Qin Haiyu complained pitifully. “It’s only because I had your daughter that I’ve fallen behind! Instead of feeling sorry for me, you’re scolding me so sternly…”
Here we go again!
She was such a drama queen.
Yu Zhile played along. “You wrong me, wife! I kindly pointed out your problem and you not only don’t appreciate it, you accuse me of scolding you!”
Qin Haiyu huffed, “I don’t care, you’re scolding me!”
Yu Zhile huffed back, “I don’t care, you’re wronging me!”
When it came to being dramatic…
Qin Haiyu realized she had been bested by her husband!
She burst out laughing. “Darling, you look so sassy when you pout! Hahaha!”
Ah…
Finally, he had made her laugh again! Not an easy feat.
It was hard enough coaxing his daughter—now he had to coax his big baby of a wife as well! Yet, Yu Zhile found this kind of life both satisfying and amusing.
“Keep practicing the song. I’m going to work on the arrangement,” he said, shooting her a glance as playful laughter echoed from the study.
An hour later.
Suddenly, a baby’s wailing rang out.
“Shh!” Qin Haiyu hushed him, signaling him to be quiet as she listened intently. Then, with a soft exclamation, she rushed out.
“The baby’s awake!”
Her sudden dash to open the door left Yu Zhile dumbfounded.
It seemed he would have to reevaluate his understanding of Qin Haiyu all over again…
