Chapter 106: Organ Transplantation and Fusion
"You’re a good person!"
"You’re a good person!"
"You’re a good person!"
The words stung. Charles was instantly reminded of that confession back in college, egged on by his best friends, when the girl had said the exact same thing to him. It had cast a shadow over the next two years of his university life, turning him into the laughingstock of those troublemakers.
"You make me feel so close to you, like you’re family, someone who wouldn't hurt me. Do you know me?" Little Jin looked up at him, her face full of anticipation, like a tiny kitten.
"I’m sorry, I don’t recall where I might have seen you. Perhaps we’ve never met," Charles replied, shaking his head.
The original owner of his current body was born in the Harrison Empire on the other side of the ocean. From birth until the moment Charles took over his soul, the farthest place he had ever traveled was the neighboring Antu County. How could he have possibly encountered this young girl from thousands of miles away?
He could have easily played along, letting her rely on him just as the young girl living with her did. Yet, under the gaze of those eyes, as pure as an infant’s, Charles felt no inclination to lie.
"I can sense that you aren't lying, but we must share some kind of connection. Could you please help me find my lost memories?" Little Jin asked, clasping her hands together in a plea.
Charles couldn't help but reach out and pat her little head. It felt soft and gentle, much like the tabby cat he used to keep. He smiled and responded, "Of course I can..."
*Hum!*
Suddenly, a terrifying noise erupted, causing his ears to ring and plunging him into a state of dizziness.
Immediately after, a massive figure emerged, tearing through space as it lunged toward them from afar. The surrounding space shattered like a mirror, revealing a pitch-black void where foul, dark liquid flowed—a sight that filled him with instinctive disgust and hostility.
A piercing bird cry echoed through the heavens. He vaguely saw the wings on the girl’s back explode in size, transforming into massive appendages stretching for dozens of meters. Flames curled around the wings, one side a dark, blood-red, the other brilliant as gold. A colossal, mysterious bird totem manifested above their heads.
The flames surged, and a noble aura poured down, overwhelming everything.
In the blink of an eye, the world before Charles shattered like glass. He felt a dizzying sensation, and when things finally calmed down, he was back in reality!
*Chirp! Hum! Squeak!*
The sounds of various insects, the wind, and rustling leaves flooded his ears. Charles gasped for the cold air, which carried a strange floral scent, finally free from the terrifying encounter. It felt like waking from a nightmare; he wanted to scream but forced himself to suppress the urge.
When he gathered his wits to ask the girl about what happened, she was nowhere to be seen.
"It gets more and more interesting. To have experienced such a fantastic journey—a mystery like a dream," Charles muttered, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
He was astonished to find that although he had spent a long time in that other world, the position of the moon above had not changed in the slightest. Clearly, the flow of time between the two worlds was completely different.
Upon returning to his room, Eileen hurried over, asking with concern, "Charles, are you alright? What did that person want with you?"
"It’s nothing, just asking about some Law Enforcement matters and needing me to act as a witness. Then Professor Garfield asked me to help him out, and I only just got back. I was too busy to send word, sorry for making you worry," Charles replied with a smile.
Eileen helped him take off his coat and hung it on the rack, sighing in relief. "I thought something had happened to you, since you hadn't come back until now. I'm glad you're okay... and it’s not like I was worried about you the whole time!"
She seemed to realize what she had said, and her cheeks turned a faint pink. Charles twitched his lips, fighting the urge to retort—*tsundere tendencies are the ruin of a person.*
Wisely, he changed his intended response: "Eileen, how is your study progressing? Do you need my help?"
"No, no, I still need about a month to finish the study tasks I've set for myself," the girl waved her hands in a hurry.
"Oh, just say the word if you need anything. It’s not like I’m short on money. As a Grandmaster Cartographer, making money is easy; I could just draft a few inheritance factor maps and earn a fortune," Charles said nonchalantly, acting the part of a wealthy, dissolute noble.
Eileen looked at him with concern: "Don't say things like that so casually. I don't know when you acquired Grandmaster-level cartography skills, but a Grandmaster as young as you is unheard of in all of history!"
"You must keep this a secret. Never tell anyone easily, or it will bring a great disaster upon you..."
"You’re not just 'anyone'!" Charles interrupted, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"I—I'm going to rest now. I have classes tomorrow," the girl stammered, as if struck by something, and hurried back to her room.
Charles wore a mischievous smile. He hadn't expected his casual words to move her so deeply; it seemed she really had developed genuine feelings for him.
Well, he would never admit that he was using the "Guide to Wooing" he had learned in his past life—it seemed being handsome really did allow you to do whatever you wanted!
He sighed softly, washed up, and headed to the basement.
To be honest, he didn't dislike her. Plus, she held significant utility for him; if he wanted to use this relationship to bind her firmly to his side, it would be quite easy. However, he didn't want to do that casually. Let things take their natural course.
...
The next day, Charles arrived at the laboratory early to continue his work.
Wearing a white lab coat, Garfield began to give him private lessons, explaining various aspects of bloodline fusion knowledge that neared the core of the discipline. This was the result of his hard work over the past several days, combined with his monstrous talent, which had made the professor realize his value and begin cultivating him as a successor.
"For organ transplantation between different species, you must first resolve the rejection response. You can achieve this using the spiritual arts I taught you earlier. Now, modify a creature yourself and let me see the fruits of your learning," Garfield said, standing to the side, watching quietly.
"Very well, Professor. Please, just a moment."
Charles picked up an experimental octopus and grabbed several strange, blood-colored vines from the side, beginning the surgery with composure.
Clearly, the professor was using this transplant experiment as a test. If he were satisfied, he would likely accept Charles as a true personal disciple, granting him access to his most core techniques—the very things Charles dreamed of.
In that case, there was no need to hold back. Let me show you my greatest talent.
"White Spirit!"
