The restaurant returned to calm.

Soon after, once the dishes were served, an enormous Australian lobster arrived, followed by a king crab and a bottle of red wine.

Song Kai, seeing all this, quickly grabbed the waiter and asked, “Excuse me, are these paid for by that young lady from earlier?”

“They’re complimentary from our boss,” the waiter replied with a smile. “He said he’d like to befriend you and hopes you’ll dine here more often. Everything is thirty percent off for you.”

Song Kai felt a surge of anxiety and said, “Forget the discount—I just want to confirm, I don’t have to pay for any of this, right?”

The waiter nodded, still smiling. “No, it’s on the house. Really, you don’t need to pay.”

“Good, good—that’s a relief. Then I won’t stand on ceremony.” Song Kai let out a sigh.

Beside him, Xu Ling couldn’t help but laugh. “You really have some clout. These things aren’t cheap.”

“Who cares, as long as they don’t ask me for money.” Song Kai said, then started eating heartily.

Xu Ling found herself taking Song Kai seriously again. This fallen scion of a wealthy family kept surprising her.

After the meal, the two walked outside.

With the red wine in her system, Xu Ling decided to share a cab home with Song Kai.

Standing by the roadside, even in a simple pastel dress, Xu Ling looked ethereal—beautiful beyond compare. Her beauty wasn’t just in her appearance but in a unique aura that couldn’t be ignored, no matter the circumstances.

Song Kai stood to one side, his gaze fixed on her.

Xu Ling raised her arm to hail a taxi, then turned and noticed Song Kai staring. She frowned. “What are you looking at?”

Song Kai chuckled, “Xu Ling, honestly, even if we didn’t have an engagement, I’d pursue you if I met you on the street.”

Xu Ling made a dismissive face. “Cut it out, the cab’s here.”

The taxi pulled up. Xu Ling had just opened the door when suddenly, a hand reached out from inside and pulled her into the back seat. The taxi billowed with black smoke and sped away.

“Damn!” Song Kai chased after the car, but only managed a few steps before a van screeched to a halt and two men jumped out, grabbing at him.

“Perfect timing!” Song Kai shouted, unleashing the Eight Trigram Palm; with two quick strikes, he sent both men flying.

There were more people in the van.

Song Kai charged in.

A burly man hesitated for a moment; Song Kai struck him in the neck, knocking him out cold.

The driver reached for a gun.

Song Kai rolled forward, grabbed the driver’s head and slammed it onto the steering wheel.

The driver was dazed.

Song Kai wasted no time, hauled the driver into the back seat, then rammed him against the iron door.

The driver passed out, blood streaming from his head.

The gun at the driver’s waist was now visible, but there was no chance to use it.

Song Kai took the gun and slid into the driver’s seat, speeding after the taxi.

On the roadside, the two middle-aged men Song Kai had struck slowly pulled themselves up, exchanging a look of astonishment.

One pulled out a special phone. “The fish took the bait, but it’s a big one. We lost control—he took the van and is chasing you.”

...

Song Kai gritted his teeth, flooring the gas. The van belched black smoke, but he couldn’t catch up to the taxi ahead.

Driving with one hand, Song Kai dialed Wu Hongying’s number, but there was no signal.

“What the hell?” Song Kai glanced at his phone—no signal, completely jammed.

Damn.

He held the phone outside, but it was useless; there must be a signal jammer in the van.

Who were these people? What did they want?

Were they Big B’s men?

Or was the Dragon-Seeking Squad after him?

Song Kai thought rapidly, anxious, because he didn’t even know who his enemy was.

Ahead, the taxi was heading toward the outskirts.

Song Kai pushed the van to 130 km/h, but still couldn’t catch up.

At that speed, the van was starting to wobble dangerously.

Song Kai ignored the risk.

Soon, a warehouse appeared up ahead.

The taxi sped inside.

Song Kai narrowed his eyes, loaded the gun, and drove straight into the warehouse.

Inside, it was dark.

Song Kai switched on the headlights and charged in.

Suddenly, a figure appeared ahead.

He stomped on the brakes.

The figure stood there, shielding her eyes from the van’s high beams—it was Xu Ling.

Song Kai froze, then slammed to a stop, leapt out with the gun.

“Xu Ling, are you alright?” He pulled her aside toward the van.

Xu Ling merely shook her head at him, saying nothing.

At that moment, with a series of clicks, the warehouse lights blazed on, illuminating everything.

Rows of computers and tangled data cables filled the space, and in the distance, a line of yellow Range Rovers was parked.

Applause broke out.

Song Kai frowned and looked up toward the second floor.

More than a dozen people stood there.

A man and a woman descended.

The man was Asian, but not Chinese—he looked Japanese.

Beside him, the woman was a mixed-race beauty with black hair and blue eyes.

She walked over, clapping and smiling, speaking in English.

Song Kai couldn’t understand her. He’d brushed up on English lately, but only for exams—now that listening wasn’t tested in college entrance exams, he’d never practiced spoken English. He could recognize words and read sentences, but couldn’t comprehend spoken English or speak it himself.

Classic mute exam English.

But that wasn’t important. What mattered was that Song Kai noticed these two weren’t ordinary—they walked with only one arm swinging and their legs moved in a rhythm, a sign of expert gunfighters, able to shoot and evade at any moment.

“Who the hell are you?” Song Kai gripped the gun, ready to throw it as a hidden weapon.

Xu Ling rolled her eyes. “Song Kai, that was basic English just now—don’t tell me you didn’t understand. They’re from the International Police Special Operations Team.”

“What?” Song Kai was stunned. He’d never imagined their identity.

Xu Ling continued, “After I was pulled into the taxi, they showed me their credentials. I checked—they’re real.”

“International Police? What do they want?” Song Kai frowned.

The woman switched to Mandarin, though not fluent. “Hello, Mr. Song, I’m sorry for earlier. We just wanted to assess our team’s capabilities.”

“What team?” Song Kai asked.

The woman smiled and extended a delicate hand. “Hello, I’m Danlina, deputy leader of this special operations team and a hacker. This is our captain and chief commander, Mr. Okamoto. We’re here to investigate the deaths of your parents.”

Danlina smiled, gazing into Song Kai’s eyes.

Song Kai was wary. These people had suddenly abducted Xu Ling, which had already annoyed him, and now their leader was Japanese, which made him trust them even less.

Danlina noticed Song Kai’s reluctance to shake hands and didn’t mind. “Oh, Mr. Song, I must say your skills exceeded our expectations—very impressive. And your girlfriend is beautiful; your concern for her is touching. I imagine after just now, she must think you’re a heroic savior.”

“Enough with the nonsense. What’s your point?” Song Kai said impatiently. “And whatever your purpose is, abducting Xu Ling isn’t right. She’s just an ordinary, innocent bystander.”

Danlina shrugged. “We just wanted to lure you here and test your abilities.”

“Heh.” Song Kai sneered, not believing her.

“That’s enough, Danlina!” Okamoto interjected, his Mandarin unexpectedly fluent. “I told you, Chinese people are cautious—they won’t trust you. Song Kai, you’re right; we brought your girlfriend here to show you that you’ll need to cooperate with us and ensure confidentiality. If you leak anything, we can always take her again...”
