Chapter 072: Your Car Has Been Requisitioned, Shiniu Crematorium
Song Kai was delighted when he heard that Xu Ling wanted to give him a gift. The key point was, it seemed Xu Ling would deliver it in person, so he had to wash up, comb his hair, and look his best.
He dashed toward the bathroom.
He pushed open the door.
Wu Hongying was inside, showering after a session of flow yoga, which had left her sweating profusely.
She had only just begun washing when Song Kai barged in.
“You pervert! Get out, now!” Wu Hongying slammed the glass door shut, though it hardly blocked the view.
Song Kai froze for a moment, then hurriedly said, “Look, Sister Ying, I’m in a rush. My girlfriend is coming over to give me a gift. Just bear with it for a bit, I promise I won’t peek.”
“Damn it, you want me to castrate you right now?” Wu Hongying shouted.
Song Kai chuckled, “If you have the guts, come out and try it. Even if you dare act shameless, you’re no match for me now.”
He began to wash quickly.
Wu Hongying turned away, fuming, but she had no choice but to endure it—this little brat was getting more and more insolent!
Song Kai finished up swiftly and then used the toilet.
Wu Hongying glanced sideways at him.
“Hey! Don’t act up!” Song Kai stared at her. “I’m watching you, don’t try to sneak a peek!”
Wu Hongying cursed him silently a hundred times. He’d already seen her bare back, and now he was accusing her of being shameless!
Bastard!
Luckily, Song Kai really was in a hurry.
But seeing the situation through the glass door, he found it hard to pee—his little Song Kai was standing at attention.
After washing up, Song Kai changed into his sharpest outfit and headed downstairs. After a moment’s thought, he took a hundred yuan with him—he could treat Xu Ling to breakfast.
He went downstairs, and before long, a bright red Chery car without plates rolled up. The car stopped beside Song Kai, and Xu Ling, dressed in sportswear, hopped out and tossed him a set of keys.
“What’s this?” Song Kai asked, puzzled.
“It’s your gift. I just bought a Tiggo 7 for you,” Xu Ling said. “It’s only been driven three hundred kilometers.”
“Uh…” Song Kai stared at the car, thrilled, but said, “Xu Ling, you’re too stingy. You drive an Audi Q8 and give me a Chery? Isn’t that a bit much?”
“If you don’t want it, forget it,” Xu Ling reached for Song Kai’s keys.
“Ahem, I want it, absolutely. If my darling gives me a gift—even if it’s a pile of crap... No, even if it’s just a tire, I’ll take it,” Song Kai laughed, overjoyed. “I’ll sign up for driving lessons today.”
Xu Ling gave a soft laugh. She wore an off-white tracksuit, her hair tied back, radiating youthful energy. The outfit showed off her figure perfectly—she was indeed stunning.
Song Kai stared at her smiling face, momentarily dazed.
Xu Ling noticed and turned away, saying, “Don’t look down on domestic cars. The quality’s really good now. This car could run in a rally. Besides, Chery’s brand has automatic anti-theft—thieves aren’t even interested in stealing it. Parts are cheap. If I gave you a Maserati, every maintenance would cost thirty thousand, insurance a hundred thousand—could you afford it?”
Song Kai quickly smiled, “I was just muttering. I’m very happy you gave me a car. It’ll make dating... No, it’ll make meeting you much easier. Come on, let me treat you to breakfast.”
Xu Ling nodded in satisfaction. “Okay, but make it quick. I have a lot to do today.”
“I do too. Get in!” Song Kai waved with authority.
Xu Ling got in the passenger seat.
Song Kai drove two hundred meters to a breakfast shop.
Xu Ling was speechless—she might as well have walked.
After breakfast, when they came out, they found a ticket for illegal parking on the car—two hundred yuan fine.
Song Kai was near tears. If he’d known, he wouldn’t have shown off. Two hundred meters, two hundred yuan fine—the traffic police were really diligent, working so early!
Xu Ling took a taxi home.
Song Kai drove the car into the residential complex and parked downstairs.
Wu Hongying, dressed and ready for work, saw Song Kai getting out of a bright red car and was curious.
“Whose car is that?” she asked.
“It’s mine. My girlfriend gave it to me,” Song Kai replied proudly.
“Damn,” Wu Hongying parked her motorcycle. “Do you have a license?”
“I... I’m signing up today. Anyway, I drive really well,” Song Kai insisted.
Wu Hongying sneered, then snatched the car keys from his hand. “I’m requisitioning the car today.”
“That’s too overbearing,” Song Kai protested, heart aching. “I have things to do today.”
“Who cares! I haven’t settled this morning's score with you yet! Besides, if you refuse, I’ll report you for driving without a license and have your car confiscated!” Wu Hongying said smugly.
Song Kai was speechless.
Wu Hongying tossed him her motorcycle keys, got in the car, and drove off triumphantly.
Song Kai was left in tears—this was karma. If only he hadn’t peeked this morning. He hadn’t even enjoyed much of a view, and now his car was gone.
It was a gift Xu Ling had just given him!
Song Kai, despondent, went upstairs, packed his peachwood sword, talisman papers, dagger, and other items into his backpack.
He mounted the motorcycle, set up navigation on his phone, and headed straight for the Shunfeng courier station in the ancient town of Yishui City.
Truth be told, while motorcycles couldn’t go on highways, they never got stuck in traffic. And since it was a police motorcycle, there was no pressure about speeding—any points deducted would be taken from Wu Hongying.
Four hours later, he arrived at the courier station in the ancient town. Song Kai parked the motorcycle and walked in.
“Two months ago, you took an order here. This is the tracking number. Check who sent it,” Song Kai said.
The staff member replied impatiently, “It’s been two months, how would I remember?”
“What kind of attitude is that! By law, senders must register with real names and leave their information. How do you run this place?” Song Kai slapped the counter and pointed to the motorcycle outside. “I’m investigating a case—this is very important. Cooperate, or I’ll shut your shop down.”
The staff was startled.
At that moment, a chubby boss walked in, glanced at the police vehicle, and said to Song Kai, “Officer, calm down. It’s my employee’s mistake. Give me the tracking number, I’ll help you check.”
Song Kai handed over the number.
The boss searched the computer and said, “There’s no sender info... Officer, don’t worry. It’s our fault. Let me check—we still have the store’s video from two months ago. I’ll look for it.”
Song Kai breathed a sigh of relief—the police motorcycle did come in handy after all.
Soon, the chubby boss pulled up the surveillance footage and pointed at the screen. “Here, it’s this old lady.”
Song Kai asked, “Do you know her?”
The boss shook his head. “I don’t. Xiao Wu, do you?”
Wu Shan came over, took a look, and said, “Oh yes, that’s her. She mailed the package that day—I received it. I asked her to fill in her ID, but she ignored me, seemed hard of hearing. She filled in the address, tossed me fifty yuan, didn’t want change, and left.”
“What were you thinking?” the boss snapped. “Don’t you know the rules for sending packages?”
“It’s not that, boss... I didn’t dare stop her,” Wu Shan said anxiously.
“Why not? Is she a tigress?” The boss put on a show for Song Kai, criticizing his employee to show they usually followed rules and wouldn’t accept dangerous packages.
Wu Shan whispered, “Boss, don’t you know her? She works at the crematorium on the outskirts of Mengshan, does makeup for the dead. Super creepy—I wouldn’t dare stop her.”
“Really? I’ve been there once. The woman who did the makeup was middle-aged, though... Wait, they look alike! Maybe this is her mother?” the boss muttered.
Wu Shan shook his head. “I don’t know. I went half a year ago for my sister who died in a car accident. Back then this old lady didn’t seem so aged. Anyway, sorry, Officer—I don’t know her name, but she definitely works at the crematorium.”
Song Kai nodded. “Alright, tell me where the crematorium is.”
“It’s pretty far,” Wu Shan replied. “It’s in Mengshan District, Shiniu Town. Weird that she came all the way across the city to mail the package here.”
The boss said, “Could it be a problematic package? Officer, we really don’t know—please go easy on us. It’s our lack of oversight, please forgive us.” As he spoke, he tried to slip Song Kai some money.
Song Kai waved him off. “Alright, just keep it confidential. The case hasn’t caused any major trouble yet, you won’t be implicated. But remember, keep my visit here a secret.”
“Of course, of course.”
Song Kai got the detailed address, mounted his motorcycle, and sped toward the crematorium in Shiniu Town, Mengshan District.
The two places really were far apart.
It had taken four hours to drive from Tengyun City to the courier station. Now, from the station to Shiniu Town, it took another four hours—he’d practically crossed all of Yishui City!
Shiniu Town was rather backward. Situated in the old revolutionary area of Yimeng Mountain, the government was working hard to develop it, but due to transportation, resources, and other limitations, poverty lingered.
By the time Song Kai arrived, it was already evening.
Exhausted, he grabbed a quick bowl of noodles and headed for the crematorium.
The area was desolate, gloomy even before nightfall.
Song Kai wasn’t afraid and walked straight in.
A hunched old man was squatting at the gate, smoking.
“Grandpa, can I ask you about someone?” Song Kai jogged over.
The old man slowly raised his head, cold and indifferent. Three twisted scars marked his face, like three enormous black earthworms, writhing and sprawling across most of his face—a sight both terrifying and repulsive...
