Chapter 119: The Corporate Theft Case (Part Two)
The company has been robbed?
Yang Changfeng sat up abruptly, shocked. "Don't panic yet. What happened? Why did you arrive there first?"
Zhang Baode hadn't even gone home to stay. After returning home and eating, his family had urged him to go back to the company to keep watch.
The couple had a conscience; they knew the company treated them well and had no other way to repay it, so they committed themselves to working hard. This was especially true for Zhang Baode. The boss had given instructions that Yang Changfeng was only holding a nominal position in the Security Department, and his reputation alone was enough; the specific duties of the department were essentially left to Zhang Baode to handle.
Rising from a handyman who wasn't even allowed to work as a doorman to a supervisor was one thing, but the psychological support it provided was even greater. Zhang Baode knew that from this day forward, he would no longer be a man who had to live a life of penny-pinching while wronging his wife and children. He could provide well for his family, and his social status had risen accordingly. This was a monumental change in his destiny.
Not only were they providing him with benefits and a vehicle, but they were also giving him real authority.
With the boss's trust and his superiors' confidence, Zhang Baode and his wife agreed that they had to give their all. They believed the only way to have a clear conscience was to treat the company's affairs as if they were their own.
Zhang Baode, who had originally been trembling and unsure of how to conduct himself, realized that if he were doing work for his own home, he would have to handle every matter, big or small, with care. Once he thought of it this way, the pressure of the job didn't seem so great. He felt certain he could perform well as the Deputy Captain of the Security Department.
Furthermore, he had heard that his father-in-law and mother-in-law were coming to his house that evening. Zhang Baode wasn't happy about it, but he couldn't say anything. He would rather be at the company keeping watch than be mocked and looked down upon by those two.
And so, Zhang Baode drove to the company to keep watch in the study room himself. He had been worried because the staff was too thin, and especially given the current state of the company, as someone at the bottom of the ladder, he could imagine what kind of schemes were brewing in the complicated minds of others.
With Wang Hu stirring up trouble, anyone who could snatch some benefits from the company would try to do so. There were plenty of valuable items in the building. Zhang Baode felt that if someone took advantage of the fact that the Security Department hadn't been fully assembled yet to sneak in and steal something, it might be understandable, but he couldn't rest easy.
Just like that, while no one expected Zhang Baode to return to stand watch himself, the pre-planned operation began shortly after one o'clock in the morning.
Two people snuck into the office building from the back, entering through a window that had been opened in advance. By the time Zhang Baode discovered them, two of the newly hired veterans were already chasing the figures for over a hundred meters. Clearly, the intruders had already succeeded.
What shocked Zhang Baode was that the two had a getaway vehicle.
Less than three hundred meters into the chase, just as the two veterans were about to catch up, a car with no license plates swerved out from under a streetlight. The two intruders scrambled into the vehicle and sped off, disappearing without a trace.
Zhang Baode immediately checked the surveillance footage. It was obvious from the recordings that the two intruders were intimately familiar with the company's layout. They calmly avoided the cameras, keeping their faces covered with hats, and ran from the first floor all the way to the roof without being detected. The two security guards on duty in the surveillance room had trained so hard during the day that they had actually snuck off to the lounge to sleep.
Zhang Baode wanted to fly into a rage, especially when the two guards put on innocent faces. His intuition sharpened, and he considered the strong possibility that these two were inside men.
If it were merely a coincidence that two outsiders could time their break-in perfectly to when these guards were asleep, enter through the back window into the lobby, and walk up the stairs to the roof—if this whole process were just a coincidence—then he might as well go buy a lottery ticket, because he would surely win the grand prize tomorrow.
There was a serious problem here!
Zhang Baode gathered everyone together. Aside from the two dedicated newcomers, he went through the rest of the group in his mind. He was familiar with them and could quickly deduce how each person would act if they were indeed acting as an inside man for outsiders.
Everyone was a suspect, but compared to the two guards who seemed to use their innocence to mock him, the new leader, the others seemed even more likely.
"We work so hard, training all day and standing guard all night, and the company doesn't even provide coffee. How are we supposed to work well?" the others mocked. "Deputy Captain Zhang, don't be so serious. It's just a few stolen items; in a company this big, is that little bit of money even going to be missed?"
Zhang Baode didn't argue with them. It didn't matter if they looked down on him, but they couldn't treat him like air. He wasn't just a deputy captain; he was a security guard for the company.
"I basically know what's going on with this matter. I hope you can persevere for a few days, and remember to be on call. Alright, you can all go to the lounge to rest." Zhang Baode knew he had to maintain a composed, authoritative stance.
Although these men were bolder than him, they had never dared to collude with Wang Hu or become his henchmen. It was clear they still held a sense of awe toward the company. To deal with people like this, Zhang Baode believed that since they didn't respect him as a leader, he would let the weight of the company do the talking!
After letting the group go to the lounge, Zhang Baode kept his two new subordinates behind, instructing them to carefully scour the surveillance footage for any potential evidence. He then went outside to call Yang Changfeng.
Over the phone, Zhang Baode sounded anxious but not overly nervous, which pleased Yang Changfeng.
"Old Zhang, you're starting to have the temperament of a leader. Good, I'll be there soon," Yang Changfeng said, before asking what had been stolen.
Zhang Baode replied, "They pried open Wang Hu's office. I don't know what they took; I haven't gone up to check yet."
This guy was still as cautious as ever!
Yang Changfeng laughed. "Good, it's fine. Don't worry, we'll check when I arrive. You hired two helpers today, right? Ask them to put in some extra effort. If this matter is handled properly, I guarantee they won't even need a probationary period; they will be considered officially employed as of yesterday."
Living in a big city like Jiangzhou wasn't easy. If one could truly help others, they would earn respect in return, especially now that the company desperately needed employees who worked with heart.
Zhang Baode's performance had been exceptional.
After hanging up, Yang Changfeng sneered as he put on his clothes. He muttered to himself, "Someone dares to defy Old Zhang? Well, there's no choice but to show you the door!"
But the matter wasn't that simple. The company wouldn't let these people leave just yet; he would observe their reactions and behavior over the next few days.
It would be truly strange if there hadn't been an inside man facilitating what happened today!
