Chapter 36 Isolated
“So, are you taking the job or not?” In the office, Chen Aijia and Yang Changfeng stood face to face like two fighting cocks, tension thick in the air. She was on the verge of losing her patience; this man had actually followed her from the gym all the way to the office, all just to avoid taking a mid-level managerial position.
Did he have any idea how rare an opportunity it was for her to get him into this role today?
Yang Changfeng shook his head resolutely, like a rattle drum. “No way. It's obvious you just want to use me as your pawn. Not happening!”
But Chen Aijia was not without her own tricks. She pulled an envelope out from under the desk—inside was ten thousand yuan, money she’d originally planned for Anya to use in buying a flower basket to send to the Eiffel Restaurant.
“A salary increase—ten thousand more!” Chen Aijia knew full well how strapped for cash Yang Changfeng was, and right now, her curiosity was piqued. She really wanted to know just how this strange man possessed such remarkable abilities.
After all, those were five seasoned fighters—not ordinary people. How had he managed to dispatch them all in the blink of an eye?
Could this man truly be heaven-sent to help her?
As that thought crossed her mind, Chen Aijia shook her head. Since when did helpers behave like this—always ready to up and leave, and now, refusing a promotion?
If he wasn’t a joker, he was something even more outrageous!
Sure enough, at the mention of money, Yang Changfeng hesitated.
“An extra ten thousand every month?” After mulling it over, Yang Changfeng decided that if the deal was really that good, he might as well stay and see how things played out.
Chen Aijia suppressed a laugh and nodded. “That’s right. Ten thousand more each month on top of your current salary. In other words, twelve thousand more per year on top of your original one hundred and fifty thousand annual salary.”
Now this job was starting to look tempting.
Yang Changfeng was swayed.
Chen Aijia threw in another straw: “Besides that, as a mid-level manager, you’ll also get a half-year bonus, an annual bonus, a year-end bonus, an attendance award, an outstanding contribution award, and a dedication to duty award. If you have the ability, every benefit our employees enjoy will be yours as well. All the perks and rewards available to a mid-level supervisor—you can have them all.”
She finished with a smile. “Well, what do you say? Will you take it?”
“I will!” Yang Changfeng gritted his teeth. He knew perfectly well that since he’d crippled Wang Hu’s fighting ability, they were now locked in a struggle to the death. Leaving the company would only make it harder for him to keep tabs on Wang Hu, while staying on—as second-in-command of the security department—meant Wang Hu could no longer use company rules to suppress him.
Yang Changfeng had little regard for regulations, but he wouldn’t disrupt the order that should exist.
This was Chen Aijia’s company. If he stirred up chaos, she’d be the one who suffered.
So what if he was the number two in the security department for now? Just wait—soon enough, he’d take the top spot too!
With a fierce resolve, Yang Changfeng said, “It’s settled, then. But don’t think you can just use me as your bullet—it won’t be that easy.”
Annoyed, Chen Aijia retorted, “Why not just say the money isn’t enough?”
Ah, her comprehension was spot on.
Yang Changfeng snapped his fingers, “Exactly. That’s the point.”
Forget it—this man would only be content rolling in cash. There was no use arguing with him.
Chen Aijia said, “Go report to the security department. You’ll have your own office, too. Remember your duty—no, remember, if you want to make money, you’ll have to earn it with results. For instance, in situations like today, if you can come up with a plan to limit your opponent as much as possible, you’ll have the freedom to act as you see fit.”
Easy for her to say—it was still just about making him do her bidding. She could dream!
“I’ll go to the security department tomorrow. For today, I’ll keep studying the company rules.” Yang Changfeng stood, but he didn’t follow her order to go wait in the security department.
Chen Aijia said, “I want to hear your reasoning.”
“Don’t get offended when I call you a fool!” Yang Changfeng sneered. “Think about it—once Wang Hu loses his five strongest men, what can he do next? He’ll only hold on tighter to what he still has. Right now, I have the authority to decide who works the night shift. Don’t you think they understand what that means for them?”
Chen Aijia settled into her chair and gestured for him to continue.
“Right now, we have the advantage. All we have to do is wait for Wang Hu to make a move. Stay put and watch how he reacts to me becoming deputy captain of the security team. As soon as he makes a move, he’ll reveal a weakness. A contest is just like a fight—sometimes, the one who moves first is the one who falls first.” Yang Changfeng said with disdain, “With intelligence like yours, I really wonder how you haven’t run this company into the ground. Alright, I’m off to study the rules. If you need me, call—or come find me in person, if you like.”
A sweet kiss from a beautiful boss had turned into a promotion and a raise. All things considered, he wasn’t losing out, but Yang Changfeng still felt disgruntled.
After all the effort he’d put in for this gorgeous boss, even pointing out the direction of the struggle—if not rewarded with her body, couldn’t she at least give him a kiss?
On his way out, he bumped into Anya, who was carrying a huge stack of documents into the office.
He gave her an affectionate slap on her shapely behind, startling the young beauty so much she nearly jumped like a rabbit.
As Anya fled into the office in shock, Yang Changfeng whistled triumphantly, then leaned against the door to eavesdrop on the conversation inside.
“Keep an eye on him. He thinks he can just walk out with all that stuff? Dream on!” Inside, Chen Aijia was speaking to Anya.
No need to ask—it had to be that balding vice president.
Chen Aijia was not one to be trifled with. He really thought he could just take her things and run, as if he could disappear into the mountains and live a good life? Not only would he have to return what he took, but he’d also pay the price.
Expelling the balding vice president was just her way of breaking up his alliance with Wang Hu in the company, but expulsion didn’t mean she wouldn’t settle scores later.
Even retired officials these days could be called back or even arrested. Leaders who broke the rules in the company certainly couldn’t escape accountability.
At least she’d kept her wits—laying bait for bigger catches.
There were plenty of parasites in the company; if getting rid of one vice president solved everything, it wouldn’t be a real problem. Next, Chen Aijia would surely put money to work.
He heard her whisper, “Find a reputable private detective agency—the money doesn’t matter.”
She couldn’t use the security department; not only would that alert the target, but more importantly, she couldn’t trust them.
Yang Changfeng was reassured. This woman wasn’t hopelessly stupid—if money could solve the problem, why waste energy elsewhere?
He spent the rest of the morning in the study room. No one came to find him, and no one came to cause trouble. It was as if he didn’t exist in the company at all.
Security department personnel passed by in the hallway several times, but no one entered. Yang Changfeng realized they were isolating him.
But what good would that do?
In less than two days, they would understand the consequences of refusing to cooperate!
