Chapter Ninety-Two: The Mix-Up
Lin Miaomiao felt as though she had to summon the speed of a hundred-meter dash from her school sports days. She hurried to Li Yanhe’s room.
The instant she pushed open the door, Lin Miaomiao was stunned. Li Yanhe was not wearing any clothes, and she forced out an awkward smile.
In a panic, she mechanically pulled the door shut again, and Li Yanhe glanced toward Li Zheng, who was hiding behind the screen in his room.
Li Yanhe looked at Li Zheng and asked, “Speak. What are you doing here?”
Li Zheng looked at Li Yanhe, then at the half-dressed man before him, and said quietly, “Didn’t you want silver? I had someone bring it over this afternoon, but you went into the palace.”
“So I brought it here myself,” Li Zheng said. Then he opened the door and saw Lin Miaomiao waiting outside. “Come in.”
Seeing that it was Li Zheng who had opened the door, Lin Miaomiao’s expression turned a little strange. When Li Yanhe saw her face, he could not help but cover his forehead and sigh.
Lin Miaomiao walked into Li Yanhe’s room with an odd look on her face, while Li Yanhe was furious.
She smiled sweetly at him and said, “Oh, Brother Yanhe, don’t be angry. I didn’t mean to see anything.”
Hearing her call him “Brother Yanhe,” Li Yanhe found it strange and asked, “Why did you suddenly come back?”
Lin Miaomiao grew a little embarrassed and said, “Just now, when I looked up at the sky, I saw a black shadow.”
“I suddenly remembered how, in those dramas—or rather, in those storybooks—powerful people are always easy targets for assassination, so I came to warn you.”
Li Zheng burst into laughter at her words and said, “Where did you read that storybook? You can lend it to me sometime.”
Lin Miaomiao raised an eyebrow and said to him, “What would you read it for? What are you doing in Brother Yanhe’s room so late at night?”
“Don’t you know men and women shouldn’t be too familiar? No, wait—men and men shouldn’t be too familiar either. What are you doing in Brother Yanhe’s room in the middle of the night?”
After she glared at Li Zheng and finished speaking, he looked at her helplessly and said, “What kind of child talks like that?”
“Do you think this prince likes that icy-faced block of wood? I’d have to be insane to like him.”
After saying that, Li Zheng took out a stack of banknotes from the side and set them in front of Lin Miaomiao. “These are what your Brother Yanhe wanted. I had someone send them over this afternoon, but you had already gone into the palace.”
“I came specially to deliver them to you, and this is how you speak to me? In that case, I might as well take the banknotes back.”
Lin Miaomiao shot him an unhappy glance and said, “You weren’t sincere to begin with. We went into the palace today because of you.”
“And these banknotes are clearly too few. If I were you, I would have shown a little more sincerity and given more. Someone like you will never win a true friend.”
Li Zheng was a little angry at her words and gave her a cold look. With a snort, he said, “I also didn’t expect Lin’an to do something like that.”
Lin Miaomiao nodded, sighed, and muttered, “That really was incredibly exasperating. Suddenly I feel like going home.”
Li Zheng smiled at her words and nodded. Then he said to Li Yanhe, “For a girl to say such things is rather rebellious, don’t you think?”
Li Yanhe shook his head with a smile. “What’s so rebellious about it? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.”
Li Zheng sighed, shook his head, and turned to leave. Lin Miaomiao watched him go and stuck out her tongue at his back.
When Li Yanhe saw her expression, he smiled indulgently.
Lin Miaomiao turned back to him and said, “If I say things like that, will it affect you?”
Hearing her, Li Yanhe smiled and shook his head. “It’s fine. No matter what you say, I can protect you.”
At his words, Lin Miaomiao suddenly froze. She felt touched, and before she knew it, she had thrown her arms around him.
“Why say something so sentimental?” she said.
Then she suddenly remembered a line from a movie she had once watched, a line she had loved deeply: “You protect the world, and I will protect you.”
Back then, she had wished for a boyfriend like that. Yet when the movie came on, she had cried her eyes out.
Seeing the girl hold him tightly with red-rimmed eyes, Li Yanhe felt his heart soften completely.
That night, he personally sent Lin Miaomiao back. When she returned to her room, the hidden guard silently looked at his master.
“What is it?” Li Yanhe asked.
The guard knelt and said, “Master, Jiang Luohan has already returned.”
Li Yanhe nodded. He motioned for the guard to withdraw. As the guard left, he suddenly remembered what Lin Miaomiao had said earlier.
Facing the direction in which the guard had gone, Li Yanhe suddenly laughed out loud.
The hidden guard heard his master’s laughter and froze. He thought over and over again, unable to recall doing anything wrong.
After the guard withdrew, Li Yanhe let out a sigh and walked out of the study.
The next morning, when Lin Miaomiao woke up and saw Li Yanhe, for some reason she suddenly thought of the scene from the previous night when she had seen him without clothes.
As she thought about it, she swallowed hard. She could not help feeling that the man practicing swordsmanship was truly handsome, and his figure was excellent.
Li Yanhe saw her staring blankly at him and said, “Wipe your mouth. You’re drooling.”
Lin Miaomiao was still dazed and did not react at first. She raised a hand to wipe at the corner of her mouth, and only then realized she had been tricked.
She rolled her eyes at once. Seeing that, Li Yanhe gave her forehead a light flick.
After being flicked, Lin Miaomiao asked, “Why did you flick my forehead?”
Li Yanhe looked at her and said, “That isn’t elegant. Don’t roll your eyes next time.”
Hearing this, Lin Miaomiao curved her lips, gave a soft snort, and ran off to the kitchen to see what breakfast was being prepared.
Nanny Zhao watched Lin Miaomiao and Li Yanhe, and felt happy for her master as well.
