Chapter 115: Night Raid
Chu Yun nodded calmly. "Don't worry, I'm fine. I just had a dream—I saw my immortal master. In the dream, he told me he had already arrived outside the city, ready to use his divine powers against the Witch Doctor Sect's army. He asked me to assist him."
Seeing the curious looks on the city guards’ faces, wondering why he ventured out so late, he decided to explain.
The guards were stunned at first, then burst into excitement. "Count, you say your immortal master has come? To confront the Witch Doctor Sect's army?"
Chu Yun nodded. "That's right! My master is an immortal, incredibly powerful. Alone, he can repel an army of three thousand from the Witch Doctor Sect."
Hearing this, the guards grew even more thrilled. "Count, your master is so formidable! Could you take us to see him?"
Chu Yun smiled gently. "I could, but my master is an immortal. Aside from me, everyone who has seen him is now dead. Though you are my people, I cannot say whether he would spare you. After all, he is an immortal, and his thoughts are beyond our mortal comprehension."
The guards, initially eager to see the immortal, immediately lost their nerve upon hearing this.
They were not fools; they knew that if they met Chu Yun’s immortal master, death would be certain.
Even if the immortal did not harm them, Chu Yun himself would, as his words implied he did not wish them to come along.
So they smiled and said, "Count, please take care of yourself. We won’t follow you."
Chu Yun sighed inwardly, acknowledging their wisdom.
Then he reasoned that no matter how sharp their eyesight was, they could never discern details nearly twenty miles away from the city walls.
He said, "You can climb the walls and look toward the Witch Doctor Sect's camp. Perhaps you’ll catch a distant glimpse of my immortal master. Even if you don’t see him directly, you will witness the formidable and overwhelming divine powers he wields."
The guards timidly asked, "Count, is that really safe?"
Chu Yun chuckled. "At such a distance, sneaking a glance at my master won’t offend him. Now, I must hurry to rendezvous with him."
With that, he mounted his horse and charged toward the Witch Doctor Sect’s encampment outside the city.
The guards hurriedly climbed the city walls, eager to witness the immortal master’s awe-inspiring magic.
After a while, seeing no signs of activity, someone asked, "Why hasn’t the Count’s master begun to unleash his divine powers yet?"
A companion tapped his head and replied, "Why the rush? The Count just rode off. It’s nearly twenty miles to the Witch Doctor Sect’s camp. There’s no way he’s met his immortal master already."
Turning around, he added, "I must quickly inform my family to come watch! Seeing an immortal wield divine power is a rare spectacle, perhaps once in a lifetime."
The others found his reasoning sound and began telling their families to come watch.
The lead guard who planned to notify his family cautioned, "We can’t all leave the gate undefended. Three of us will stay behind; the rest can go tell their families."
Everyone agreed, finding this plan sensible.
They decided who would remain by playing rock-paper-scissors, and the rest went to summon their families.
Word spread quickly. When their families heard the news, their departure caused a stir, which neighbors noticed.
Soon, the entire town of Chu’s Family, numbering five hundred and fifty, was awake and crowding the city walls, eager to witness the immortal’s divine powers against the Witch Doctor Sect.
Those who couldn’t find space on the walls climbed nearby high ground to watch from afar.
Though curiosity burned, knowing the immortal master did not wish to be seen, the dangers of wild beasts at night, and the overwhelming force of divine magic meant no one dared to venture beyond the city.
Meanwhile, Chu Yun rode to a large tree about five miles outside the city and stopped.
Thanks to his elite soldier training, he swiftly climbed the tree and retrieved ten bombs he had secretly stashed there during the day.
Though improved, each bomb still weighed ten pounds.
Ten bombs meant a hundred pounds in total.
This was why Chu Yun had to ride out of the city.
Even with his current physical prowess rivaling that of his former life as a special forces soldier, carrying one hundred pounds over twenty miles on foot would be unbearable.
As for the noise his horse might make alerting the Witch Doctor Sect, he had no worries.
First, his special forces background made him a master of stealth and counter-surveillance, unlikely to be detected easily.
Second, he had deliberately let Huang Tiangui believe he had ample supplies and intended only to defend the city, making the enemy complacent, confident he wouldn’t strike first.
Lastly, the Witch Doctor Sect’s troops had just arrived outside Chu’s Family Town after a long, exhausting march and needed rest. They wouldn't expect a nighttime surprise attack.
Indeed, as Chu Yun predicted, he strapped the bombs on his horse and rode deep into the territory, less than five miles from the enemy camp, without being noticed.
He dismounted, led the horse quietly, and approached the camp cautiously.
The horse, sensing Chu Yun’s careful steps into the shadows, followed silently.
Soon, Chu Yun reached within five hundred meters of the camp.
He hid the bombs in the grass, tied his horse to a large tree, and approached the camp on foot.
Initially, he only planned to observe the camp’s defenses and finalize a simple attack plan.
To his surprise, the Witch Doctor Sect’s camp was alarmingly lax.
"Heh," Chu Yun murmured with satisfaction. "So Huang Tiangui spread the rumor that I have ample supplies in Chu’s Family Town, convinced I’d defend rather than attack. They never thought I’d take the initiative."
Delighted by the success of his plan, he then stealthily infiltrated the camp itself to better understand its layout and devise a more effective bombing strategy.
