Chapter Sixty: Fame Spreads Far and Wide
After listening, King Qi's laughter grew even more joyful. "Lord Luo, I've suddenly realized that making you a mere bodyguard is far too beneath you. You ought to be my advisor!"
Luo Feng bowed respectfully. "Your Majesty flatters me. Whatever ideas I have are entirely thanks to the years I've spent by your side, learning through observation and being inspired. All credit belongs to your wisdom!"
"Haha!" King Qi let out a hearty laugh.
Following Luo Feng's suggestion, he immediately had the story of Chu Yun's miraculous medical skills—how he cured the young Prince Qi—written onto bamboo slips and displayed throughout the royal city. At the same time, he arranged for storytellers in every corner of the city to recount the tale of Chu Yun healing Prince Qi, so that the masses would hear it.
Thus, through both the official proclamation and the words of the storytellers, Chu Yun’s fame quickly spread throughout the royal city of Qi.
Everyone knew that Prince Qi’s illness was grave—renowned doctors from the entire Qi dynasty and neighboring states, even the flourishing Witch Doctor Sect, had exhausted their means and failed. Even King Qi had begun to distribute white mourning cloth across the city, preparing the whole nation for the prince's death.
Now, with Chu Yun having cured Prince Qi, the people were astounded, marveling at Chu Yun's peerless medical prowess and his ability to bring the dead back to life.
Chu Yun had become a miracle healer in their hearts.
Conversely, the Witch Doctor Sect, having tried every method and failed to cure Prince Qi, suffered a severe blow to its reputation. Many in the city, when sick or injured, no longer sought out the sect, but instead inquired everywhere for Chu Yun, hoping he would treat them.
King Qi capitalized on the situation, revealing to his loyal ministers that Chu Yun was staying at Luo Feng’s residence, encouraging them to seek Chu Yun for treatment.
The Witch Doctor Sect, upon learning this, felt greatly displeased.
Zhou Bing immediately summoned all senior members to convene a meeting and discuss countermeasures.
When the meeting began, Zhou Bing noticed that Master Huang was not yet present, and he ground his teeth in irritation. "That scoundrel Huang, how dare he be late to the meeting!"
No sooner had he spoken than Master Huang entered.
He looked calmly at Zhou Bing. "Heavenly Master Zhou, there’s no need to get worked up."
Zhou Bing snorted. "Huang, with the mess you’ve made, how can I not be agitated?"
Master Huang shook his head and smiled. "What mess? I am quite pleased with how things have turned out."
His words made Zhou Bing stomp in fury. "Our sect's reputation is ruined, Chu Yun’s fame soars, King Qi is already arranging for ministers to contact him, and soon he’ll have influence that’ll give us headaches, yet you’re pleased?"
"Of course," replied Master Huang.
Zhou Bing, beside himself, clenched his fists. "I really want to punch you!"
He had always disliked Master Huang’s superior intellect, which gradually gave him more authority within the sect. Now that he had a chance to seize upon Master Huang’s mistake, he was eager to put him in his place.
Yet Master Huang, unhurried, produced three bamboo slips. "I am a bit late, and I apologize for keeping you waiting. The reason for my tardiness was to prepare these."
"These are two documents: one is the official announcement from Qi regarding Chu Yun’s cure of Prince Qi; the other is the script used by the city storytellers to recount the event."
Zhou Bing eyed the slips and snorted, "We already know about these. Why did you bring them? And you dare claim your lateness was to prepare them?"
Master Huang ignored him, addressing the assembly, "Have any of you examined the announcement and script closely? If not, I suggest you do so now."
Zhou Bing retorted, "I've seen them. So what?"
Master Huang rolled his eyes at him. "Heavenly Master Zhou, if you’d truly examined them, you wouldn’t speak to me in such a tone. With your intelligence, you should notice that neither the announcement nor the script mentions the Witch Doctor Sect’s involvement in Prince Qi’s treatment—not a single word."
Smack!
Seeing Master Huang roll his eyes at him, Zhou Bing slammed the table and rose. "Huang, that’s exactly why I’m angry! If it weren’t for your bad advice, we wouldn’t have taken on Prince Qi’s case. Now that he’s cured, we gain nothing and are left in this passive situation!"
"If only we’d persisted in sabotaging Chu Yun’s treatment, perhaps Prince Qi would have died and our plan would have succeeded."
"After all, even Chu Yun and the others were exhausted and needed rest."
Master Huang shook his head. "Heavenly Master Zhou, please sit and calm yourself. Let me analyze this for you."
Zhou Bing snorted coldly. "Go on, let’s see what nonsense you’ll spout this time."
Master Huang said, "Since no one outside knows we were involved in treating Prince Qi, and since King Qi wants Chu Yun to receive all the credit and reward—ignoring our contribution—we should undermine their foundation: let Prince Qi die!"
Zhou Bing exclaimed, "Are you mad? We’re treating Prince Qi, and you want him to die? Wouldn’t that disgrace our sect?"
Master Huang replied, "I told you, no one knows we’re treating him. They only know Chu Yun is, so if Prince Qi dies, it will be Chu Yun who killed him."
The others, hearing this, praised Master Huang for his cleverness and insight, marveling at the contingency plan he’d devised.
Zhou Bing, seeing everyone applaud Master Huang and realizing his argument made sense, was left speechless. He could only purse his lips, bury his head, and silently lament another defeat at Master Huang’s hands.
This time, he lost all dignity, failing to display even a trace of authority or composure—looking like a fool from start to finish.
