Chapter Sixty-Three: Women Stand Equal to Men
Bai Hao, relying on his exceptional eyesight, had already spotted the Witch Doctor Sect’s men. Seeing that they remained motionless, he couldn’t help but smile inwardly. Then he said, “Everyone, take up your bows and shoot in that direction!”
With that, he took the bow and arrows from his horse’s back, clamped his legs tightly against the saddle, and prepared to fire.
The Witch Doctor Sect’s people grew tense upon seeing them ready their bows. Someone couldn’t help but ask their leader, “It seems they've spotted us. What should we do?”
The leader thought for a moment. Bai Hao’s indicated direction wasn’t where they were hiding. He gritted his teeth and said, “Everyone, stay calm. He may not have found us yet—perhaps he’s just probing.”
Hearing this, the group felt some dissatisfaction, but they had to obey and continued to remain silent and unmoving.
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!
Immediately, Bai Hao gave the order, and his cavalry squad fired a volley of arrows.
They shot precisely in the direction Bai Hao had pointed—not where the Witch Doctor Sect was lying in ambush.
Seeing this, the leader couldn’t help but laugh, “See? He hasn’t found us.”
The group breathed a sigh of relief.
Yet before their relief was complete, Bai Hao ordered his cavalry squad to draw their bows again.
Without waiting for any reaction, they fired directly at their position.
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!
Nine were struck by sharp arrows in an instant—all nine of them archers.
Bai Hao’s cavalry squad numbered fifteen; with one arrow per person, only fifteen arrows were fired, yet nine were hit.
Moreover, those nine were all archers.
If anyone still believed Bai Hao was merely testing for an ambush, they’d be utterly foolish.
The leader realized they’d been duped, his expression grim. He shouted, “Damn it, we’ve been tricked! Everyone, charge out!”
“Kill! Kill!”
Twenty Witch Doctor Sect cavalrymen shouted, their momentum surging as they charged toward Bai Hao’s squad.
Clank, clank!
Following them were twenty armored warriors. Their heavy bronze armor clanked loudly with every step, shaking the earth and inspiring dread.
Inwardly, they cursed the leader—if he’d ordered the charge sooner, they wouldn’t have lost nine archers for nothing.
With twenty cavalry for the assault, twenty armored warriors for the blockade, and ten archers lying in ambush, their cooperation would have been perfect!
Now, without the archers, their coordination was broken, and their fighting strength was greatly diminished.
Chu Yun glanced over the scene and sighed to himself. Although the technology here was backward, these fighters possessed a certain discipline and tactical cooperation—their equipment was simply too poor.
Bai Hao’s cavalry squad, seeing the twenty enemy cavalry charging at them, quickly tossed aside their bows and arrows, not caring if they broke, and drew the long spears from their horses, preparing to meet the attack.
At the same time, Chu Yun said to Ye Zelan, “Miss Ye, find a place to hide for now.”
Ye Zelan snorted, “Doctor Chu, do you take me for someone weak? I’m not so fragile.”
With that, she tugged the reins, letting her horse carry her to stand side by side with Bai Hao’s cavalry squad.
Afraid Bai Hao and the others might worry for her, she added, “Don’t worry about me. I can handle myself.”
Chu Yun was a little surprised, but recalling that Ye Zelan was a herbalist who often trekked through mountains and knew how to ride, he figured her skills weren’t lacking and felt less concerned.
He then joined Bai Hao and the others, saying, “Fight seriously. Don’t worry about me.”
Bai Hao’s cavalry squad was somewhat speechless at Chu Yun and Ye Zelan’s actions, but with the twenty enemy cavalry charging swiftly, they had no time to dwell on it.
Their plan was simply to protect Chu Yun and Ye Zelan as much as possible once the battle began.
“Kill! Kill...”
Soon, the Witch Doctor Sect’s twenty cavalrymen rushed in fiercely.
But Bai Hao’s squad, all elite among elites, showed no fear. Their ranks remained perfectly ordered, unmoved by the onslaught.
As the opposing cavalry approached, they thrust their spears forward.
The Witch Doctor Sect’s cavalry were evidently less skilled. Facing Bai Hao’s squad, six of them didn’t know how to react and were pierced cleanly, likely mortally wounded.
The remaining fourteen engaged Bai Hao’s group in close combat.
Yet although Bai Hao’s side had slain six, they were momentarily unable to break away.
The Witch Doctor Sect’s cavalry now had a clear numerical advantage: fourteen against eight—almost every fight was two against one.
Even for Bai Hao’s elite squad, some struggled to hold off multiple foes, their defense nearly faltering.
One cavalryman was on the verge of being stabbed by a bronze sword.
At this critical moment, Ye Zelan acted. She charged in on horseback, gripped the reins, leapt into the air, and delivered a heavy kick to the Witch Doctor Sect cavalryman, knocking him clean off his mount.
Her bold move startled everyone, earning silent admiration for her courage.
Chu Yun was surprised as well.
Clearly, Ye Zelan bore deep hatred and had trained diligently over the years in pursuit of vengeance.
But he had little time to dwell on it—one of Bai Hao’s cavalrymen was in dire straits, beset by two Witch Doctor Sect attackers.
Chu Yun spurred his horse forward, leapt from the saddle onto one of the attackers, clamped his legs around the man’s head, and struck his neck with a hand like a blade, killing him.
The rescued cavalryman was momentarily stunned but quickly took advantage, attacking his remaining assailant.
Ye Zelan and Chu Yun had both intervened at critical moments—one knocking an enemy down, the other killing outright. Their actions had greatly aided the squad.
This allowed Bai Hao’s cavalry to stop worrying about their safety and focus entirely on the fierce combat, unleashing their full elite skills.
The duels quickly concluded, and Bai Hao, as captain, dispatched two foes with his impressive martial abilities.
In the blink of an eye, only eight of the Witch Doctor Sect’s cavalry remained.
But by then, twenty armored warriors had arrived, and the situation was still perilous.
