Chapter Sixty-Seven: A Day of Great Joy
Yang Liu’er and Chu Yun embraced for a long while before reluctantly letting go. With her brows furrowed like willows, she said, “Husband, a few days ago, Second Uncle said it wasn’t safe for me to live at home alone and wanted me to move in with them. I was so scared, thinking something must have happened to you in the royal city.”
“I’ve already been living at home for more than half a month, and Second Uncle never thought it unsafe before. But now, all of a sudden, he says this—it just seems suspicious to me.”
“I asked Second Uncle if something had happened to you, but he wouldn’t say. He only told me not to worry. But the more he said that, the more anxious I became.”
“It wasn’t until I saw you now that I finally felt at ease.”
“Husband, did something really happen to you?”
Chu Yun shook his head with a smile. “What could possibly happen to me? Am I not standing right here, safe and sound?”
He guessed that the reason Chen Ping had suddenly insisted Yang Liu’er move over these past days was because he’d received a pigeon post from the royal city, learning that Chu Yun had been framed by the Witch Doctor Sect and fearing they might come after Yang Liu’er.
But Yang Liu’er was not convinced. “Are you really alright, husband? If nothing’s wrong, why did Second Uncle suddenly want me to stay at their house?”
Chu Yun replied, “Perhaps Second Uncle knew I was coming back and wanted you to join them for a family reunion meal.”
He then took out the jewelry he’d bought for her. “Liu’er, look at these pieces I bought for you. Aren’t they beautiful? Do you like them?”
The moment Yang Liu’er saw the jewelry in his hands, she was stunned, her face aglow with delight. She couldn’t help but exclaim, “Wow, these are so beautiful! I love them, I love them so much! Thank you, husband, thank you!”
Poor as she was, the most valuable ornament she’d ever worn was a wooden hairpin. She had never seen such exquisite jewelry as what Chu Yun had brought from the royal city, so naturally, she was overjoyed.
Seeing her so happy, Chu Yun couldn’t help but sigh inwardly—sure enough, all women are alike; their attention is easily captivated by beautiful things.
He said with a smile, “As long as you like them, Liu’er. Let me help you put them on.”
“Yes, husband!” Yang Liu’er replied, her face alight with happiness.
Chu Yun carefully adorned her with the jewelry.
Yang Liu’er immediately hurried to the water jar to admire her reflection. “Wow, it’s so beautiful! This jewelry is truly stunning!”
She spun around joyfully in place, then dashed into the house. “Second Aunt, come look! My husband bought me jewelry—so beautiful, so lovely!”
Li Sanniang’s voice rang out from inside, “Gorgeous, truly gorgeous! The craftsmanship is superb—you can’t find such work even in Chujia Town. Liu’er, you’re already beautiful, and with this jewelry, you look like a fairy!”
But to their surprise, Yang Liu’er soon ran back out. “Husband, this jewelry is so pretty and finely made—it must have been very expensive, right?”
Chu Yun replied, “As long as you like it, Liu’er, I don’t care how much it costs.”
But Yang Liu’er shook her head. “That’s not right, husband. We can’t spend money carelessly, or how will we make ends meet in the future?”
Chu Yun couldn’t help but sigh—she truly was a virtuous girl.
He smiled and said, “Don’t worry, Liu’er. With the wealth I now possess, we could eat meat at every meal for a lifetime and never run out.”
Yang Liu’er’s face shone with delight. “Really, husband? You’re not lying?”
With a laugh, Chu Yun took a ten-tael gold ingot out of his bundle. “See for yourself—is this real or not?”
Yang Liu’er was dazzled by the brilliant gleam of gold. It was a long moment before she came to her senses, then she took the gold and bit it. “It’s real—this is real gold!”
She quickly covered her mouth, hid the gold on her person, and whispered, “Husband, just whose illness did you treat in the royal city to earn so much?”
Chu Yun smiled. “It was the son of the Prince of Qi.”
“What? The Prince of Qi? The great prince of our Grand Qi Dynasty?”
Yang Liu’er was even more astonished.
Chu Yun nodded. “That’s right. Not only did he reward me with gold, but he also granted me a title of nobility. I’m no longer a commoner, but a nobleman now—and not just any nobleman, either.”
Yang Liu’er asked, “What kind of nobleman?”
Hearing their conversation, Li Sanniang hurried out, curiosity writ large on her face. “Yun’er, you were granted a title? What rank?”
Chu Yun smiled and took out the jade insignia of an earl. “An Earl! I am now Earl of Dingxi!”
“What? An Earl?” Li Sanniang cried out in surprise.
Yang Liu’er, however, asked blankly, “Second Aunt, what kind of rank is an Earl? Is it higher than Baron Jiang?”
Li Sanniang replied, “Of course! Above a baron is a viscount, and above a viscount is an earl. Now, it’s not like the old days—a baron might own only one manor, a viscount can have a whole town, but an earl? An earl can have several towns as his fief!”
Yang Liu’er asked, “You mean, husband is now lord over several towns?”
Li Sanniang laughed, “That’s right, Lady Earl!”
Yang Liu’er’s face instantly turned bright red, and she grew a little shy.
Li Sanniang looked to Chu Yun, wanting to ask where his fief was, but recalling that the fiefs of non-clan earls were usually not ideal, she refrained from questioning further.
She laughed and said, “Yun’er is back, and now he’s an earl—it’s wonderful! We must celebrate properly. I’ll go fetch Jun’er and tell his father to hurry home, and pick up something delicious on the way.”
With that, she remembered Chen Jun had taken the horse to the backyard, so she headed over there.
But as soon as she reached the backyard, she stopped dead.
Chen Jun was hanging from the jujube tree—he had hanged himself!
“Jun’er!”
“Jun’er!”
“Jun’er, what are you doing…”
Li Sanniang screamed frantically on the spot, staggering back several steps and almost falling.
She had thought that with Chu Yun’s safe return and his elevation to earl, it would be a day of joy, and that Chen Jun would be happy enough to forget about Wang Shuangxi’s troubles.
Who could have expected that after tying up the horse, he would find a rope, hang it from the jujube tree, and seek his own end with a short sword.
