Chapter 88: Determined to Win

“Xiaoyu, why do you look so pale?”
It was late at night, and Chen Lan hadn’t dared to sleep. She knew a bit about the Lin family’s affairs and the loan contract, thinking her daughter would return home elated. But she never expected Lin Shuyu to collapse onto the sofa the moment she walked in.
Seeing Lin Shuyu so exhausted, her complexion ashen, Chen Lan’s anxiety spiked.
“Xiaoyu, answer me!”
“What’s going on? Weren’t you supposed to get the loan contract?”
“You’ve done so much for the Lin family; surely they wouldn’t let you suffer indignities?”
Lin Shuyu closed her eyes, taking a long moment before slowly opening them. “Mom, I’m fine.”
“It’s just… I’ve been busy all day and I’m tired. I’ll go to my room and sleep.”
As Lin Shuyu got up and headed for her room, Chen Lan exploded in anger. “Damn it, you were definitely bullied at the Lin family’s place!”
“Hong Yu! Hong Yu, get out here right now!”
“Wasn’t it you who arranged the loan contract? Now that there’s a problem, I don’t care what it takes—you have to resolve it!”
Chen Lan had always suspected there was something off about the loan contract, and now, seeing the state Lin Shuyu was in, her mind instantly jumped to the worst.
“Mom, what does this have to do with Hong Yu?” Lin Shuyu cut in coldly, then slumped in defeat. “It’s all my fault. I’m the useless one.”
“Hong Yu went to so much trouble to get me the loan contract, and yet… in the end, Lin Shuqi snatched it from me.”
As she spoke, Lin Shuyu finally couldn’t hold back her tears. Her sobs were gentle yet heartbreaking, and seeing her like this, Chen Lan’s heart ached terribly.
“Xiaoyu, don’t worry! Tell me everything, take your time. I’ll make sure you get justice,” Chen Lan urged anxiously.
Lin Shuyu sighed. “Tonight, the Lin family held another meeting.”
“I never thought they’d do this. That loan contract was thanks to Hong Yu’s favor and my own efforts. Yet Grandpa and Uncle gave it to Lin Shuqi, saying she should be the one to deliver it to Miss Xia.”
After saying this, Lin Shuyu glanced up at her mother before continuing, “And… as for making me General Manager of Lin Corporation, which they promised before—now that’s gone too. They said I should just go back and be a department manager. I refused.”
“Damn them! After all you’ve done for them, they have the nerve to demote you to a mere manager?” Chen Lan cursed. “I told you, the Lin family are nothing but ingrates. I told you not to help them!”
“Now you see—they’re not worth your kindness!”
Lin Shuyu sighed again. “I suppose Grandpa and Uncle changed their minds because they were influenced by Second Uncle’s family…”

Chen Lan cut her off. “Are you stupid? Still making excuses for those two old bastards?”
“No way! We’re not letting this go! Come with me right now—if they don’t give us an explanation, I’ll tear down their precious house!”
Chen Lan was so furious that veins bulged on her neck and her face turned a deep red, her eyes blazing with rage.
Lin Shuyu managed a bitter smile. “Mom, they must have discussed it beforehand. Calling me over was just a formality.”
“Going over now to make a scene won’t help. We’d just become a laughingstock for Second Uncle’s family.”
“Why are you two still awake?” At that moment, Lin Jiahua returned home from a business dinner.
Seeing him, Chen Lan immediately redirected her wrath.
“Lin Jiahua, what kind of man are you?”
“Do you know how your family treats your daughter?”
“Come on! Go demand an explanation from the Lin family right now! You’re their son—why should your daughter be treated differently?”
…
As her parents’ argument grew fiercer, Lin Shuyu, head throbbing, retreated to her room.
Lying in bed, thoughts swirled in her mind. Staring at the ceiling, she suddenly felt that being born into this world was nothing but sorrow.
“Honey, you must be tired.”
“I drew you a hot bath. Come soak for a bit.”
Somehow, Hong Yu had slipped into the room without her noticing. He was crouched by the bedside, checking the water’s temperature with his hand.
If Chen Dayong or Zhang Tian and the others saw this scene, their eyes would have popped in disbelief.
They’d gotten a real taste of Hong Yu’s temper lately. He didn’t just scold them—when he was truly angry, he’d actually smash cups or bottles.
“Hong Yu, you…”
Lin Shuyu was deeply moved, but soon her spirits fell again. “I’m sorry. You worked so hard for this and I wasted such a valuable opportunity.”
“If I’d known it would turn out this way, I…”
“Hey, enough of that,” Hong Yu interrupted with a smile. “Opportunities are meant to be used—even wasted, if need be.”

“Besides, things aren’t over yet. How do you know this opportunity has really been wasted?”
…
The next day, the Lin family actually called Lin Shuyu.
But it wasn’t anyone important; they simply asked if she’d return to Lin Corporation as a manager. Lin Shuyu didn’t even bother to reply—she just hung up.
“Grandfather, Uncle, it seems Lin Shuyu isn’t happy with your decision,” someone sneered.
“Tsk tsk, so many people would kill for a job here, and she’s not even being asked to start from the bottom—straight to a manager! Yet she’s still dissatisfied.”
“Some people are never content. Does Lin Shuyu really think she’s qualified to be General Manager?”
Originally, Lin Shuqi was supposed to deliver the loan contract to Xia Yurong at Morgan Bank today. But the old man and Lin Jiahao weren’t fools—they felt it unwise to entrust such an important task to Lin Shuqi alone.
After some discussion that morning, they decided Lin Shuqi would still deliver the contract, but only within the company, not on her own to the bank.
“How ridiculous,” sneered Second Aunt. “Lin Shuyu really overestimates herself. If she weren’t family, I doubt she’d even get through the front door.”
The old man frowned. “Enough. If Xiaoyu wants the job, she can have it. If she doesn’t, she doesn’t. The most important thing today is the meeting with Xia Yurong.”
Lin Jiarong sighed. “Good thing we switched Xiaoyu out for Shuqi. With her attitude, who knows what would happen if she had to meet Xia Yurong today?”
“Grandfather said to drop it—so why are you still talking about it?” Lin Jiahao scolded. “Shuqi, here’s the contract. Take good care of it.”
Lin Shuqi hurried over, accepting the loan contract with great care.
She was always scheming, so she was extra cautious—afraid of being outmaneuvered.
She checked the contract over and over, and only after making sure everything was in order did she finally put it away.
The old man nodded approvingly. “Well done, Shuqi.”
“Even though we handed the contract to you ourselves, you must always double-check. Never let your guard down.”
“Go on! I’ll be waiting at home for your triumphant return.”
Lin Shuqi took two steps back, bowed to the old man, and turned to leave.
This time, she was determined to succeed!
